22. Don't buy it at Amazon
From the publisher:

Amazon has recently begun issuing its own "CreateSpace" editions of works in the public domain. Last October, they did this with The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition, which they issued in an edition that varies drastically from the See Sharp Press edition. Amazon did the following: 1) They omitted the lengthy, copyrighted introduction and foreword (which provide information on the history of the book and its various editions, and the reasons why the standard edition was expurgated); 2) They omitted all of the explanatory footnotes that appear in the See Sharp edition; 3) Amazon (under their imprint, CreateSpace) falsely claimed that they hold the copyright to the book; 4) They used considerably smaller type than in the See Sharp edition, so their edition is harder to read; 5) They issued their edition with a cheap black & white cover; 6) Amazon used exactly the same subtitle that we used: "The Uncensored Original Edition." This is par for the course, so far (though the false copyright claim and the use of our previously unique subtitle are scummy).

But Amazon also "disappeared" the See Sharp Press edition of The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition from their web site. If you run a search for "The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition" on Amazon, the See Sharp Press edition simply doesn't show up in the results—the only thing that does is the Amazon "CreateSpace" edition. (Our edition also doesn't show up when you search for simply "The Jungle.") To our admittedly biased selves, this seems more than a bit unfair.

So, if you want to order The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition, we'd ask that you order it from us or buy it at your local bookstore—not from Amazon.

67. Um, wrong...
From the publisher:

Amazon has recently begun issuing its own "CreateSpace" editions of works in the public domain. Last October, they did this with The Jungle: The Uncensored Original Edition, which they issued in an edition that varies drastically from the See Sharp Press edition. Amazon did the following:

The publisher is mistaken. Createspace is the service that Amazon customers can use to publish their own stuff. for example, you upload them a pdf or a CD's worth of music, they send you back a proof copy, then once you clear it it can be sold at amazon (or of your website or whatever) - when people order a copy it's printed and bound (or whatever, if it's a CD/DVD) to order.

In short, anyone can use Createspace to publish. It's a service, not a publishing imprint. Amazon doesn't choose, edit, or censor the material, they just print & bind it. I use it for DVDs occasionally, and the only input Amazon has is on technical issues, like the exact pixel size of the cover artwork has to match their template so it won't be off-center and stuff like that.

But the edition that malaise wants is the one from See Sharp Press, and the Amazon CreateSpace edition doesn't have all the accompanying material.

71. I've got that. But as it's public domain, anyone could make an 'uncensored edition'.
So basically what See Sharp is offering (and this is a good thing) is a superior editing contribution, making sure to include all the original material, introduction and so forth. Anyone else could do so too as far as public domain material goes, but SS were the first ones to put that effort in.

it was quite literally CENSORED to remove much of the pro-Socialist commentary. It's all addressed in the forward of the unexpurgated version.

45. Well, this truly was
It's actually been the subject of academic debate with one (yes, one) individual (very vocal) claiming the published edition was what Sinclair wanted. I think there is too much evidence to discount that completely. The Jungle was originally serialized in J.A. Wayland's socialist paper, The Appeal To Reason. The old original papers were thought to be lost until they were found just a few years ago. So, we now have the original, as-serialized version - which is what you can buy today as published by Sharp Press. The "editing" was, in fact, censorship as the publisher plucked out almost all references by Sinclair to organizing for a socialist democracy.

We have a progressive library board. There are plenty of books by conservative authors, but even more books by liberal authors. They also have a wonderful shop where local artists can display their work. A piece of me cries when I hear of libraries closing due to lack of funds. Education is our best hope.

On that note, today I picked up the book "Idiot America" by Charles P. Pierce. I expect it will be entertaining & horrifying at the same time.

And the factory farms have been polluting ground and other water sources for
