Mother Takes Blame For 400-Pound Teen
13-Year-Old Has Life-Threatening Diabetes

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was widespread reaction to a story first aired on Local 6 Tuesday about a 400-pound 13-year-old. Doctors contacted state officials and the boy's mother was fearful the Department of Children and Families might take him away.

....

"It was my fault. I wasn't there. I wasn't disciplining him right," the 44-year-old mother said.

Lewis said she is struggling with Josiah's weight and the possibility that DCF could remove him from her Orlando home.

....

"I'm not an enabler. Well, actually I did enable him. I allowed him to have his freedom at home," Lewis said.

With food?

"With food, whatever. It's not drugs. It's not illegal," Lewis said.

1. I saw a TV show
About a morbidly obese teenager getting help from a team of doctors, getting a documentary made about him and his surgery, and no one ever talked about his mom losing custody of him. I have to think that this decision is racist, and I don't see how this is going to help the child at all, emotionally. It's just going to give him more obstacles and heartache.

2. Obviously She's To Blame. Totally Ignorant As A Parent.
But she shouldn't have him taken away outright in my opinion. There should be strict oversight, probation and monitoring under court order though.
