A change may be coming soon that would make it easier for airline workers to join unions. The National Mediation Board is expected to soon announce a change that would allow a majority of workers who vote in union elections determine whether to join unions. Right now in order for workers to win a union at the airlines a majority of workers in a class, not just the majority of workers voting in the elections, have to approve the union. Both the Association of Flight Attendants – CWA and the International Association of Machinists want the change. The flight attendants are in a campaign to organize more than 20,000 workers at the merged Delta and Northwest Airlines while the IAM is seeking to organize 14,000 workers at the same airline.
