Shame on Oprah, et al for their recent foray into Pain Porn
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 11:30 AM by SoCalDem
I feel so sorry for the woman who was mauled by the chimp, and I know she;s suffering terribly, but what was the point of exhibiting her poor mangled face on tv?

Is there an epidemic of rampaging face-chomping chimps on the loose?
Do we have to hide indoors to keep ourselves safe from them?

Nope. this woman is a singular victim of a horrible "animal experiment" gone terribly awry.

Chimps are WILD ANIMALS..not pets. It was not a given, that this would happen , but it's likely that some day, somewhere and to someone, this kind of thing happens when wild animals are treated as quasi-husbands pets.

There is little to be learned from this woman's experience, except for the basic things we learn as children.. like stay away from wild animals.

If there is something to be learned from seeing someone's destroyed face, perhaps it would be to show the after effects of surgery to remove cancers caused by chewing tobacco..at least that would prove cautionary to young men who see no harm in using the stuff...but to display this poor woman, just to get a gasp from the audience, and then the replaying of it over and over on cable news, just for effect..well that's ghoulish, and pretty unnecessary.

I hope that woman will get lots of medical care, and that her face can be restored so she can eat and breathe normally.. I'm glad she has no memory of the event

1. surely you're not suggesting that people like her should be hidden from public view?
The only people who saw her on Oprah were people who chose to watch Oprah. When this woman goes out in public she "exhibits" her face to anyone and everyone she encounters.

3. The woman wanted to reveal her injuries in a way
that she felt kept her dignity.

Anyway, why should she hide? Her injuries aren't her fault.

She also said she wanted to kill the interest in a photo of her for the tabloids. Revealing what's left of her face herself takes the demand for $$$ away.

I watched that show. She's a lovely person and is very sad she and her daughter have to live separately right now. She's missing her daughter's Sr. year of high school.

Besides, you can't hide away for ever. She's hoping for a face transplant some day, too. And hands. The chimp destroyed her hands.

I really hope the best for her.

And yeah, her family is suing the shit out of the woman who was the chimp's owner. This woman says that she was always afraid of him.

5. Listen, if it helps her with future encounters with the public- where people may be shocked
at the condition of her face, then it's a positive.

I had same thought when seeing a tv program about super-obese. You don't want to stare at people in RL but it is normal to be curious.

6. Perhaps we should have news police
...who can pre-screen everything for us and judge whether it is worthy.

7. I am in awe of her courage and will to live.
This actually inspires and reminds me not to get so overwrought over my physical ailments, limitations and imperfections.
