The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported an "unusual event" at FirstEnergy Corp.'s Beaver Valley 2 nuclear reactor in Shippingport, Beaver County, early yesterday when 800 gallons of reactor coolant leaked into the plant's pressurized relief tank. No water was spilled during the nine minutes that coolant water flowed into the holding tank inside the plant's containment building and no radioactive release occurred, the NRC and FirstEnergy said. The Beaver Valley 2 reactor had been shut down Oct. 12 for refueling and maintenance work and the company had initiated start-up procedures when the incident occurred, the company said. The event caused FirstEnergy to temporarily suspend the restart activities, but Todd Schneider, a FirstEnergy spokesman, said the company planned to resume startup activities by yesterday afternoon. A FirstEnergy news release said reactor water levels were properly maintained throughout the incident. An unusual event is the lowest of four NRC emergency classifications. The commission said the leak event was discovered at 3:05 a.m. and ended at 4:04 a.m. The commission said its senior resident inspector reported to the site to monitor the company's handling of the event and any follow-up actions. Neil Sheehan, an NRC spokesman, said the pressurizer is filled with a combination of water and air, and is used to balance pressure levels in the primary cooling loop. The event involved the improper flow of reactor coolant water into the pressurizer relief tank. Mr. Sheehan said no radioactivity escaped into the containment building or the environment, and there were no public health or worker safety impacts. FirstEnergy operates two nuclear power reactors at Beaver Valley, 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Together they produce about 1,779 megawatts of electricity.
