Detroit rally protests troop surge into Afghanistan

"Detroit -- About 200 anti-war demonstrators and peace activists held a rally in the rain Wednesday afternoon to protest President Barack Obama's plan to send thousands more troops into Afghanistan.

Obama is sending 30,000 more U.S. soldiers to Afghanistan, saying "our security is at stake." Obama also said he would start pulling troops out in about 18 months. The first wave of new troops will arrive by Christmas.

For Detroiter Tom Hinsberg, a retired schoolteacher, sending more troops means more problems and bloodshed.

"For too long we thought war would solve our problems," Hinsberg said. "It never does. It just creates more problems, more anguish -- more death."
