A big hug for independent bookstores.....
I went into the downtown Borders store in Ann Arbor yesterday looking for Noam Chomsky/Edward Herman's "Manufacturing Consent" with the updated introduction. I couldn't find it on the shelves, even though Borders' computer said it was likely in the store.
So I went over to the Information desk and asked the dude sitting there if he could help me find "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky, assuming that most people, particularly those who work in a bookstore, know who Chomsky is, if not Herman. He then asked, "Do you know what section he would be in?" I told him, "Political Science, and I checked the computer and it said the book is likely in the store."
He then replied, "Norm Chomsky, right?" and started looking it up himself. He found the book on the computer, and we walked over to the PolySci section, and he couldn't find it under old Norm's name or under Edward Herman.
So I left, went over to the independent Crazy Wisdom bookstore and tea room. Not only did a store employee find the book for me immediately, she started discussing her favorite parts of the book, Chomsky's philosophies on economics, and recommended a bunch of similar books to read, and mentioned that she found all of them at the Ann Arbor Public Library....for free.
It's nice to shop at bookstores where people actually know about books.

1. I frequent a used book store
which is packed to the gills with aisles and aisles of all kinds of books and the Lil Old Lady who runs the place knows a little of something about authors and books and their locations. Always a joy to visit.

And, in the local Barnes and Noble there is one young lady who is very knowledgeable. Makes it a pleasure to shop.

3. Title Wave
Our independent book store in Anchorage, Alaska is another such example. The employees know books.

Side Story:

I was traveling on business, and I did what I usually do when traveling--find a bookstore to relax at the end of the day. It was a Barnes & Noble, and I took the book I selected to the counter. It was a book that would not be on the Bush/Cheney recommended reading list, so I said I would pass on the 10% discount and pay cash for the book to leave no electronic record of my reading habits. The clerk responded, "You'd be surprised how many people do that now with this kind of book."

tattered cover has been a fave for years--although, since they moved, it seems the selection is not
as wonderful as it once was. doesn't feel the same at all.

6. One of my friends owns a local toy store. It is
really nice -- quality products, variety, book readings, yo-yo clubs etc... He is really worried because a chain toy store is opening nearby at the beginning of 2010. I am scared for him and his family. It is a shame.

7. We had a better one than our lil neck o the woods deserved for several yrs...
.... before the owner had to throw in the towel. He used to let his two cats have their run of the endless, labyrinthian towers of books of any and every stripe. Wonderful place to kill a snowy, winter afternoon. Miss it...

8. Palin evidently had a contract with Borders to do her "bus" tour.
I won't buy anything from them again.
