2. that used to be my business
I was in CNC Machine Tool Sales and Apps Engineering for the last thirty years - until I got laid off in February.

In my time I have seen US Machine Tool Builders go from Number One in the World for overall sales to maybe about Number Eight or Nine today.

Back in the eighties the Japanese heavily penetrated the American Market with high quality, reasonable price and great customer support. The response by the big American builders of the day was to cry to Reagan and demand "protection" so they could regroup after a little "breathing space". They got VRA's and all died anyway.

The big American Builders now days DID NOT EXIST thirty years ago - such as Haas and Fadal. The American builders from thirty years ago are now all gone, as a result of a self devouring brand of diversified corporate stewardship.

A guy even wrote a book about it. "When the Machine Stopped".

Burgmaster, Bridgeport Machine, Pratt and Whitney Machine tool (my first job), Bullard, Warner Swazey, Cincinatti Milacron, New Britain Machine, Kearney and Trecker, Devlieg. All great American names now long dead.

FWIW
