Lining Up to Buy Air Jordan Shoes, Fights Break Out
SACRAMENTO - Sacramento police officers were called to Arden Fair Mall Tuesday night after fights broke out in lines of fans waiting for the new Nike Air Jordan Basketball shoes.
Police say 2,000 fans were waiting for the midnight release of the shoes. That's when fights started breaking out around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. Officers arrived before the crowd got out of hand. There were no arrests and the crowd dispersed peacefully.
Although authorities reported the mall closed its doors without selling any pairs of the shoes, one customer, Kyle Lew, e-mailed a picture that showed he and three friends were able to purchase 18 pairs. Lew went to multiple stores to buy the shoes since most stores have a limit on the number of purchases.
Many of those unable to make purchases at Arden Fair regrouped outside the Westfield Downtown Plaza.
The new Air Jordan XI's aren't exactly new. They're a re-release of the same shoes that were released in 2000 with small changes. The shoes came out four years after Michael Jordan wore them in the 1996 movie "Space Jam."
