Sun, moon causing tremors deep in fault
Sun, moon causing tremors deep in fault

BERKELEY, Calif., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The tug of the sun and the moon are causing tremors nearly 15 miles below the surface of the San Andreas fault, scientists in California said.

The tremors are occurring in fluid-lubricated ground that has the consistency of peanut butter, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, said in a release Wednesday.

Tides raised in the Earth by the faint tug of the sun and moon are not known to trigger earthquakes directly. The tides, however, can trigger swarms of deep tremors that could increase the likelihood of quakes on the fault above the tremor zone, said university seismologist Robert Nadeau.

"The deep San Andreas Fault is moving faster when tremors are more active, presumably stressing the seismogenic zone, loading the fault a little bit faster," Nadeau said. "And that may have a relationship to stimulating earthquake activity."

We also have a black president. Perfect conditions for a real life natural disaster movie

Why is it that the white guy never has to tell the world it is ending?

11. That numb-nuts has been here for 11 months and has over 9,600 posts.

An average of almost 300 posts a day on DU, day in and day out. Unfortunately, he posted gibberish on one of my threads last night also -- the first time I've been so "blessed".

Also the last time. If the comments here and on my thread are indicative, I think I'll give him an "ignore" for Christmas. That's the least I can give myself to celebrate the holiday.

Trolls on speed -- now that's a big "ho-ho-ho".

12. Actually he/she averages just under 14 posts per day
Reading really IS fundamental, but then so is math.

18. on further reflection, thank you sincerely for catching my 4:00 am pretty simple math mistakes...

... and misread profile.

After all, I am trained as a "numbers" guy and sorta made an arse of myself in the early morning process. Merry Christmas.

If I'm going to be perterbed at "ignore", I should have been more forthright and commented on his immediate effort to sidetrack this particular OP, as he had done earlier to an OP that I thought might garner at least a little interest on GD, as it dealt with NORML's ranking of the ten most important cannabis-related stories of 2009. No, "ignore" killed it off fast (as did at least a few unrecs.)

He may not be the obsessive poster that my early morning, bonehead math misstated, but -- for my first two contacts with ignore -- I see quick (and effective) efforts to shut down discussion with someone who spews banal, distracting and (really) insulting comments.

Even this short time with "ignore" was more than enough for me. I do agree with the other poster here -- "ignore" is dull and (likely) ignorant also.

Thank the Goddess and DU for the ability to remove speed-bumps from our virtual world here with the "ignore" function. It is amazing how nice a feature it is, though -- for a variety of reasons -- my rogue's (or rouge) gallery has grown fast lately.

21. The movie The Day After Tomorrow had a white Prez and VP who looked like Cheney
They were portrayed as slow on the uptake and the President gets killed by the weather, Mexico gets all its debts to the US canceled and Americans end up in a tent city in Mexico with VP Cheney as their President. Not a promising ending.

13. some people have been saying this type thing for years
But traditionally, scientists have shied away from saying that the sun and the moon cause ANYTHING on earth other than tides, heat, and light.

(Hint: note the wording of the statement)
