Archaeological dig to reveal mystery Roman building in Chester
Source: Chester Chronicle

ARCHAEOLOGISTS are investigating a mystery Roman building underneath the Dewa Roman Experience premises in the city centre.

They will tunnel through the brickwork and sandstone blocks above the Roman foundations of the secret building and into the void behind.

There are plans for a 58-bed hotel at the Pierpoint Lane site, off Bridge Street, but any significant structures and finds will be accommodated within the design, possibly through the use of glass floors.

Archaeologist Mike Emery said: “It’s something substantial but we don’t know that is. It has been suggested it might be Roman hospital but no-one quite knows.

4. I'm just a fan, roguevalley. I fell in love with archaeology after
Edited on Sat Dec-26-09 12:33 AM by Adsos Letter
a family trip to the Native American sites at Tuzigoot, Walnut Canyon, Montezuma's Castle and Well, and Wupatki. It was during a trip to Arizona when I was about 12. From then on I wanted to be an archaeologist, but ended up in the building trades for 30+ years.

I did earn a MA in History along the way, and that has provided some degree of satisfaction in allowing me some insight into how people in the past perceived their world (from what we can glean from their writings); still, there is something special about holding a stone tool in your hand, knowing that some ancient man or woman envisioned it, fashioned it, and used it...

What sparked your interest in archaeology or The Past, in general?

PS: Your username suggests you live somewhere in the Rogue River Valley? My in-laws live on hwy 199 out of Grant's Pass, on some nice property tucked away between Selma and Kirby. :hi:

Merry Christmas to you!

5. I was going to be an archaeologist until the lack of jobs and the
expectations for girls in the late 60's and early 70's made that impossible. SIGH! I love it so.

I was raised in Central Point, smack dab in the middle of the valley. Selma and Kirby are sure purty. Your in-laws are so lucky to still live in what I always considered heaven. Keep these coming. They brighten a day that too often is so full of stuff not worth doing or mentioning. :-D

Thank you, adsos letter and Merry Christmas back at you!
