Just want to point out that last month when I said the govt. unemployment figures were
inaccurate and made to sound more rosy:

http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/04/news/economy/jobs_outlook/index.htm?hpt=T2

I caught a lot of flak for pointing out what eventually came true.

1. This refers to last years numbers...
Which means the recovery this year has been even more dramatic than what has been reported.

4. The "recovery" means the country is not headed for a depression anymore...
BTW, DC area is doing fairly well, jobs wise. I do realize that most the country is not like DC. Hopefully the job situation picks up elsewhere soon. Good luck!

6. thanks for the good luck wishes, I've been unemployed for over a year
and see nothing on the horizon. the DC area has jobs, but the housing costs are more than I'd make, even if I could get one.

see, I'm over 50, and no one is hiring old people.

but thanks for your "good luck" ! it will help to feed my family.

8. I am over 50 too but I dont consider myself old..
Experienced and knowledgeable are better terms. Not all parts of DC are expensive.

14. Ever notice..
... how it's always someone who hasn't faced the reality of trying to find decent employment in today's economy, in our age range, that wants to tell us that good times are just around the corner?

15. Actually, I"m thrilled for them that they don't have to face it. But the fact that they havent
inhimbits their ability to understand or "walk a mile in another's mocassins".

16. Agreed on both counts.
But unless there is something game changing done to stem the tide, SOON, there's gonna be some of them getting a rude wakeup call.

5. If you are a machinist, a Buyer/MRP planner or a SolidWorks-savvy engineer come here
We desperately need all of them and cannot find anybody with much promise so far.

12. are they paying?
my company is hiring machinists as well, but at the 8.00 an hour they're offering they're having a hard time getting anything more than a warm body in the shop. on the plus side they're glad to promote you, even give you a job title, but don't expect any more money to come with the promotion.

13. Depends on what you call paying - I think we're at least double that $8 but not my dept.
I will check if you like.

18. why would I be happy? been unemployed for a year
what possible reason would I have to be happy?

I would rather the numbers were different, but I think its wrong to pretend we are in a recovery. That delays and prevents actual action to do something about it.
