if you get somebody who is making absurd, histrionic claims like "focus on the family is like the taliban" then when an ACTUAL analogy to the taliban comes along, people who are listening to you are less likely to realize the real threat (because they are numbed by the hysteria).

it's kind of similar to the crazy lady in one of our districts. she calls in all the time because there are people sneaking around her yard. there aren't. but in the eventuality a burglar or something IS sneaking around her yard, nobody will believe her.

the hysteria is also analogous to the drug warriors who made outlandish claims about marijuana, then cocaine, then crack cocaine.

when a drug came along that actually was pretty fricking awful (meth) they had already lost credibility.

it's also simplistic. the hysterics want to believe FOF et al are just evil "others" because it diminishes responsibility to treat them like rational people with a different POV. it's no different than demonizing the enemy (a la vietnam) by using names like "gook" and likening them to subhuman status.

So, the evidence: I saw and heard first hand a call for the mass murder of all gays by 'good christians.' Focus on the Family loved these guys until just recently:

I think many underestimate what these people are doing in the U.S. They hide behind their Constitutional right to practice their chosen religion and they abuse it.
