Jenny Sanford: "I really miss the free prison labor at the SC governor's mansion"

On the Daily Show Mrs Sanford bemoans the fact that she no longer has inmates to keep her two outside dogs clean and take care of the gardens..

What comes out of the mouths of the uberwealthy just floors me sometimes, they so lack any self-awareness of their privileged status.

Edited for speling..

1. I would have too. It's lovely to have people who want to do things for you.
She was perfectly aware of the privileged status. She was the wife of the governor. Normal rich people don't have prisoners to garden for them. What you completely missed was how much the prisoners were involved with the dogs. What you missed was the prisoners WANTING to bathe the dogs. You don't get to keep pets when you're in a cage yourself. Getting out of the cage to work with flowers and dogs was a special privilege for those men whom we assume were incarcerated for good reason? Or even if they weren't, their eagerness to do well so they could stay with the flowers and dogs wasn't lost on the lady who benefited.

And, considering the churlishness of her husband and the self-involvement of her teenage sons, those prisoners might well have been the brightest part of her day. Because they were the first thing that came to mind when she was asked about what she'd left.

It's funny. You came away from that interview condemning the generic rich person. I came away surprised to have met quite a nice, funny woman.

9. While I am absolutely against the use of prison labor
with that being said, I'm sure as prison jobs go, the governor's mansion detail is probably a pretty choice gig among the inmates.

13. Yeah, now just think about what you have to do to actually get that gig..
Consider that the Stanford prison experiment showed a substantial number of guards become sadists very quickly, and those were just randomly chosen college students, not people who applied for the job of guard..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment#Results

Several guards became increasingly cruel as the experiment continued. Experimenters said that approximately one-third of the guards exhibited genuine sadistic tendencies. Most of the guards were upset when the experiment concluded early.

2. Yes, I saw that
It was breathtaking. People in the audience were laughing as was she, so it was kind of weird. I think she was laughing for totally different reasons than the audience. I bet she misses the plantation. No wonder our government gets so screwed up when the people who represent us are treated like potentates. I used to feel sorry for her because of her crazy husband, but no more!

5. How disgusting
And dare I say un-American ? Is the fact lost on the uber wealthy that we fought a revolution to get royalty off our backs? I swear, they want to be royals so badly. :grr:

6. "Un-American?" So the Founding Fathers didn't include...
...slave-owning oligarchs who set-up their own form of a "good ol' boys" network? Considering the exploitation that built this empire, I'd say what she said was pretty run-of-the-mill for this nation.
