A World of Difference
There is a world of difference between you and us.

We argue amongst ourselves over the best way to ensure a good life for the many.
You debate us in the hope of ensuring that the good life only belongs to the chosen few.

You call them what you perceive them to be: lazy, good-for-nothing, irresponsible Welfare Queens, in need of being wrenched off the communal teat.

We recognize them for what they are: the homeless, the poverty-stricken, the down-on-their-luck, in need of assistance to take their rightful place as part of the community.

Your world is black-and-white – and you place a high value on being the latter, espousing its superiority.

Our world is a tapestry – and we place a greater value on the strength of the fabric than the color of its individual threads, all the more appreciative of the beauty of its many hues.

You complain about not having what you want.
We champion those who don’t have what they need.

You lure the ignorant, and encourage them to remain so.
We appeal to the misinformed, and invite them to see the truth.

You prey on the frightened.
We encourage fearlessness.

You delight in the skewing of the truth.
We take joy in its dissemination.

You see Justice as a circuitous road – full of loopholes and excuses, a route best twisted to meet the needs of those who trod upon its well-worn path.

We see Justice as a straight but never narrow path – full of hope that wrongs will be righted; brilliantly lit every step of the way.

You shout the words of Christ from your pulpits, when convenient – and as suits your purpose.

We pray silently to the God we choose to embrace, each in our own way – as suits our individual beliefs, as we pursue the Higher Purpose that we find in caring for our fellow men.

You trot out the tired talking points, and proclaim them as new ideas.
We talk about ideas and invite discussion – and won’t tire of making that point.

You claim you want to take your country back.
We are determined to take our country forward.

You say No, you can’t.
We say Yes, we can.

You say We can stop you!
We say Take your best shot …

It’s our world now, it’s all about US – and you can talk to the hand (or from it, as the case may be). You can gather the disgruntled, (all six hundred of them) – the easily manipulated, the easily swayed. You can preach to them about all you’re doing – as they sit and watch you do nothing, other than that which benefits your own self-interests, your own agenda, your own ambitions – all to your own benefit.

You can raise your mis-spelled placards on the streets. You can throw your money-grubbing-fists into the air. You can appeal to the narrow minded, the bigots, the self-righteous, the malcontent. You can incite violence against your fellow citizens, and encourage hatred aimed at the world-at-large.

But you can’t escape the truth of the matter.

It’s a world of difference. And the days of your world are numbered – while the days of our world have just begun.

(It’s my birthday, and I’ll rant if I want to. I’m a little bit older – and, hopefully, a little bit wiser. I know the world moves slowly towards the ultimate goal of being a better place. But it moves along, nonetheless – and, despite all obstacles, is steadfast in reaching its destination.)

12. The "we" who care about the guy ...
... in your sig-line photo - which was taken by my husband, JeffR, BTW.

Or, more succinctly, WE (Democrats) versus THEM (the Republicans).

22. Sadly, I'm afraid what you attribute to "WE" frequently does not apply to Democratic politicians
I don't feel the democratic party - on the national stage - actually represents the things you describe a majority of the time.

I think that problem is so much more critical to address than focusing on the ways that the republican party is "worse."

There seem to be few Democratic leaders and political representatives left who prioritize the need of the poor ahead of the whims of the financial elite.

Worse still is the fact that one of the main differences between the modern Democratic and Republican parties seems to be the ways in which they lie to their bases to keep them supportive.

Republicans lie to their bases and stir up anti-community, anti-society self-centeredness. Democrats seem to more often than not lie to their base by using the rhetoric of working or middle-class and talking about workers and communities.

The notion that Democrats are for a "we" society (where we means ordinary working american families first and together) while Democrats are for a "me" society seems to be a false dichotomy in many cases.

There are good democrats in Washington - a few. But they certainly do not guide the direction of the Democratic Party. Rather they are marginalized and ignored.

I would like to see people get serious about the failures of the national Democratic Party and all of the opportunities that have been squandered by these people.

Democrats are better than Republicans. Democrats are better at decorating our national "house" than Republicans are.

But our house is on fire. And neither Democrats or Republicans are interested in putting that fire out.

Imagine what it would be like if we organized and relentlessly demanded that the Democratic Party either address core structural failures of our political and economic system and left the Democratic party if it refused to do so.

Maybe the Republicans would enjoy a temporary boost in power amidst the turmoil that would come with challenging the status-quo supporters and the corporate lackeys in the Democratic party. Sometimes finding the courage to fight means accepting some dark days before victory. But I do not believe that their short-term gains would last.

I'm sorry but I don't believe the Democratic party - in its national party leaders, or its national political leaders, or in the bulk of its national political representatives - stands with the "we" that you describe.

I didn't leave the Democratic Party - it left me. And I still ally myself with the handful of courageous dems that also believe their own party is broken and needs desperately to be rebuilt. I stand with them.

36. I was interpreting it more as left vs right than Republican vs Democrat..
Many Dems are not left; but almost all Republicans are Right (tho' not right!)

"Your world is black-and-white – and you place a high value on being the latter, espousing its superiority."

When I was able to work I argued many labor law cases (for the union of course) and when the charging party would say that it's case is a black and white case, my statement was that their is no black or no white just varying shades of grey.

Great rant, glad to see you back and keep up the great work as it is a real inspiration for many.

30. Sounds familiar
"It is the eternal struggle between these two principles -- right and wrong -- throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time, and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity and the other the divine right of kings. It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, 'You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it.' No matter in what shape it comes, whether from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle."

49. I applaud the sentiment, but I see precious little of what you describe among Washington Dems today.
Example: I have seen any number of posts today in defense of the president's controversial "bonus" remarks, from supposed DEMOCRATS, that go well beyond some arguably ill-chosen words from the president to proclaim that there is NOTHING WRONG with the CEOs who destroyed our financial system and put millions out of work getting multi million dollar bonuses after getting their asses bailed out by the American taxpayer.

The people who were victimized by these crooks are still out of work, out of their homes, struggling to survive.

And the rest of us face pay freezes, frozen lending, busted state and local budgets, soaring credit card rates, and god knows what else, as these so-called Democrats or Progressives praise the most grotesque inequities of our failing system to the skies.

Sorry to rain on your most worthy post, let alone your birthday.

But I think it's time we all took a good long look in the mirror and ask ourselves what we REALLY stand for.
