WOW!! THUNDERSNOW!!!
I've never heard it before...it's different than thunder - lower register, really booming and persistent - goes on for almost 10 seconds at a time. We're having a LOT of snow here in Philly...amazing...

I also hear tree limbs cracking and breaking all over the place...I hope we don't lose power...I have a generator but its only good for the refrigerator/freezer, a couple lights, but not the heating system. If a tree branch breaks near our main power line...it's all over. No internet (No DU!!), no movies, no heat, but we have each other.

Now they're closing the Interstates around Philly they say...WHOA! That's never happened...even for the 30+ inch snowstorm I think...I could be wrong about that.

4. I was cleaning off my cars and
literally when I finished the second one, there was over an inch of snow back on the first. Granted, I was taking my time, but Gee...what an adventure!!

7. Thanx...and I even closed the office today!
Without them asking me that is...broke, but a great boss! Of course I was not going to ask anyone to come in to get their teeth fixed...only problem is that some pharmacies are closed and I called in Rx's for emergencies involving pain and/or swelling to answering machines which weren't answered. Ugh.

The son will try for Friday if he's snowed in tomorrow.

6. They closed I95 in Virginia earlier today
They reopened it recently. This is a crazy snow storm. For us in DC, it is the 2nd big storm in less than a week.

12. Only saw it happen once back in the early 1980's here in STL
we ended up with about 18 inches or so and it crippled the city for a couple of days. I am now trying to convince daughter unit who is in NYC to leave the office (attendance today was optional) and go home, but she is persistent. I think I will forward this thread to her.

Stay safe!

16. Where does she live?
She should have no problem in Manhattan. She should bail by 3 if she is going anywhere else (unless she's a stockbroker).

25. It's going to get harder to get out as time goes on
And a couple hours will compound the problem at this rate. We're supposed to get over 12" and most of it hasn't fallen yet.

she is home okay and tired, said streets & trains are pretty empty.

She is in her mid 30's and all, but I am still the daddy unit and worries about the little girl.

13. I've heard of those -- never experienced one. Wow.
If you lose power, don't use up the generator for the fridge/freezer, just put the stuff in the snow banks.

Also, lots of candles can really warm up a place if you don't have a fireplace (something I just recently learned).

Stay warm and safe! :pals:

14. Is your heat -all- electric? You can always unplug the fridge and freezer and put everything
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 02:14 PM by farmout rightarm
outside if it's at or below 32 deg. and have more generator capacity for other things (but use no space heaters, toasters, hair dryers or any devices that do nothing but make heat!...2 or 3 of them will eat up all the power a small to medium gen can provide!)

15. Here's a plan,
Your freezer should be good for 24 hours, if you don't open it. Use the generator for heat for that time, keep the heat as low as possible or close off the room with the freezer. (My brother moves his freezer to the back porch) Keep the heat going and every 4/6 hours or so run the fridge to cool it off. Replacing the food in the fridge is cheaper than replacing your plumbing. Good luck.

22. Heater won't plug into generator so to speak...
every year I say that i'll provide for it and then don't do it...

We have a drill when the power goes out...no opening refrigerator, etc....it it's off for more than 1 hour, we transfer all the frozen to the other fridge, and let loose. I have an emergency drainage valve for the plumbing should the temp get too far down BUT it's a stone house and stays at 55 degrees for the better part of day without any heat...

I have 20 gallons of gas for the generator which would last 5 days with sporadic use.

I am a survivalist at heart...lots of food in the house.

Cozy!

30. You would have to "Google" it, but
There is a way to plug in the generator to the house wiring, We use our outside plug. (?) then plug in the heater, you have to unplug every thing in the house. ( or not have it running) As I understand it ( I've been wrong about electricity before) It is just a way to route electricity through wire.
If we could have someone with more knowledge than me, jump in here? Have you gone to the Help forums?

21. First time I heard it I freaked out
I was stuck in white out snow, my wipers weren't fast enough to keep up and as I was trying to scrap my windows there were all these explosion type sounds. I was really freaked until I made it home and the news explained it. I grew up here in New England and that was the first time I remember hearing it.

24. We're getting all sorts of reports from the USA here.
I think the last time a winter storm in North America made those kind of headlines here was 1978, when the only
way to navigate the Massachusetts Turnpike was on skis.

26. We have maybe 2-3" of snow here in a 'burb near Detroit
After enduring nearly all-day weather updates on TV yesterday, warning of at least 6-10" of snow that was forecast to fall overnight for our area. I don't know how much snow fell west or south of us, but the school closings, at least around here turned out to be completely unnecessary.
