Leslie Marshall was the host on my local progressive radio station's late Sunday night show.
She relayed a story about her early days in radio when she was invited to sit in for Sally Jesse Raphael. The station told her that SJR's radio program was ending.
When SJR began, she was like the rest of us, driving herself to work, doing her laundry, cleaning her house, cooking the dinner. After her TV show became a success, she had a driving service, help at home, all the star trappings.
SHE HAD LOST TOUCH.
This is what has happened to so many of the people we elect to represent us. They don't have a clue anymore what it's like to live the way the majority of us do. They don't have to worry about the mortgage, the rent, the food for the kids, paying for the doctor, filling up the gas tank.
It's almost "them" against "us".
I don't know what we can do about it other than keep trying to elect the good guys, but I'm not so sure how realistic it is to expect them to be immune to all the perks and money being thrown at them.
THEY have what they consider to be The American Dream -- peace of mind. They don't realize so many of us don't know what that is any more.
