The one big side effect from the snow storms: Baby Boom!
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 04:44 PM by Renew Deal
People are stuck at home for days with nothing to do. In some cases they have no power or heat. There's not much to do, and friction is a great way to generate heat. Mid-atlantic OBGYN's are going to be very busy practicing their love with women for the next 9 months. :D

1. Only if those women (and men) don't practice birth control.
Even Snopes will tell you that the notion of explosions in birth rates nine months after events that leave people with no power or heat is an urban legend.

2. Blizzard of "78 in Boston. I was Deputy Mayor of Newton Mass.
On the road with the plows for days. We set up an emergency hotline. There was a no travel ban. No one could be on the roads except emergency vehicles and plows. We got calls on the hotline from absolutely desperate guys begging for rides to the drug store to pick u protection. We calmly explained that no one could get anywhere and that the stores were closed. These guys where hysterical. Someone decided to check the births 9 months later. Amazing!

7. Did you document it? 'Cause Snopes would sure like to know.
They claim that all reports of baby booms following nine months after a major blackout event or other disaster are urban legends unsupported by fact.

http://www.snopes.com/pregnant/blackout.asp

I'm inclined to believe them, because while it's amusing to think of oodles and oodles of people makin' like bunnies 'cause there's nothing else to do and paying the price nine months later, there's no statistics to back it up. The "evidence" always seems to consist of anecdotes told by nurses in maternity wards nine months later, when questioned by reporters trying to investigate the theory. And of course, if prompted, they will always say that, come to think of it, the maternity ward HAS been real busy lately, heh heh.

But really...especially when you factor in birth control...not likely. Although you can always find some couple on the local news happy to "confess" that their own baby was created as a result of last winter's blizzard.

11. God. That was so amny years ago! No we didn't document it. Someone
called Newton/Wellesly hospital on a whim. It probably is an urban myth but we did get those calls. I can attest to that. Another set of calls we got were from people saying they were doctors and had to be plowed out to get to their hospitals...can you imagine! After a while we caught on that the entire population of Newton were not docs. Then, when we got a call like that we'd say, OH, Doctor, we really need you to man the emergency center, we'll come and pick you up. Hang up. Funny memories I haven't thought about in years!

"Who wants to bet we see a spike in births come November? …or maybe just an uptick in anti-biotic prescriptions in March?

Shelves are showing a good supply of lube, though. Make of that what you will."
