1. E-GADS MAN! Never leave auto-update enabled!!!
Even if it DIDN'T do shit to your machine on its own, WHEN it decides to do it is going to fuck you so hard you wish you hadn't been born. If you're five minutes from out the door and have to print that report you just finished, it will decide that's a PERFECT time to tell you not to turn off your machine and that it may have to reboot a few times to install the update. Then there's the time you're watching a DVD with your S.O. in bed and it is just approaching the climax scene - another perfect time. Auto-update is evil.

3. Yes. I thought it was supposed to ask permission first.

25. LOL! Micro$oft? OBVIOUSLY M$ knows better than YOU do!
 While the majority of M$ users probably are too dumb to own a computer, M$'s assumption that they know better than the user is insulting.

No, it doesn't ask permission. If you leave it enabled, it just does whatever the fuck it wants to whenever the fuck it happens to do it. If I thought M$ were capable of creating something with enough intelligence, I would accuse them of making it activate an update when it detects you can least afford the time. I think it is just pure dumb luck that lets it interfere at the most inconvenient points.

If you want to update the machine, shut down all applications and do it manually. Then go take a dump or make dinner or something and come back later to see if the machine still boots.

2. Mine always update in the middle of the night.
Sometimes it takes a few tries to reboot. Not as bad as it was right after I installed IE 7. DU is freezing my computer today, for some reason. 5 reboots already.

5. My poop'n thing just sits there wanting me to start it in safe mode.
I'm afraid to, so it's now just a pile until someone can tell me what to do other than buy a stick of dynamite for plugging in somewhere.

I was pissed that it didn't ask permission to update, so I did a hard shutdown. Now the piece of crap won't reboot.

7. Happened on both of our computers today
My lady had trouble getting on the Internet, she figured the problem was the snow. On hers, I just turned it off (using the power button), and on mine, I just let it reboot itself.

I figured it was a pretty major fix, with that happening.

8. We run Linux w/firefox 12. seems pretty stable
well it was until I got near the machine..

If you can get someone to DL it from a faster server to disc, its free and pretty stable.
It does let you select what updates you want or you can set it to tell you when they are available and most of the time you don't have to immediately reboot..it waits patiently until next time you turn off the machine and kicks it in on restart.

15. Check your settings after reboot in safe mode(F8) and select "last good configuration...." .
This will setup back to last good run before any updates. Now remember it will now try to update again. These are very important fixes so let them install and reboot normal when done.

14. You LET Microsoft automatically update your computer?
zOMG, NO WONDER you are having problems.

You have to treat Microsoft updates like sex predators. Never leave your computer unattended with Microsoft. You could end up with an unusable machine if you let them toy with your computer wily nilly like that.

I always wait until I see what the latest update will fuck up. People will complain and I can learn from their experience without the headache. If I can stand to have the latest fuck up, I'll update. If not, I'll tell it no on that one and to never ask me again on that one.

Screw it. Life's too short. Never leave your computer unattended with Microsoft. Microsoft is the dirty uncle. You have to protect your computer from it. Actually, watch Microsoft updates CLOSELY even if you are in the room when Microsoft tries to mess with your computer. It'll fuck it up with you sitting right there, if you are not careful.

16. Or I would strongly not recommend pulling power cord while in middle of an update.
Like the OP did.

"hard reboot" is a nice way of saying ripping out the power cord.

18. Did that once with my work computer in a fit of anger...
My personal comp runs ubuntu but when my parental units had to get a new computer we (kids) made sure it was a mac. My life has been zen since. I'd go with mac myself if I didn't like linux so much. Though for the hardcore computer gamers they really do have to use windows. Each os has it's own perks and downfalls and the choice should really be what will fit the users application set best.

20. Do like I did and download and install one of the Linux distros
once I finally did it I found it to be relatively easy to make the conversion from micro$shit's xp too. I think its maybe as easy as the transition to windows 7 from either xp or vista:puke: I can't imagine my ever going back to a micro shaft product now that I've broken the tie. I'm using Ubuntu and Mint and they both are pretty easy to learn, If you use firefox already you've got half the battle won already.
My neighbor thinks that microshitass is screwing up peoples xp machines with auto updates trying to make people give up and buy their new product windows7. I wouldn't put it past them for that either.
Been missing seeing you here lately, i hope every thing is going ok for you.:hi:

I've heard openSuSE and other distros are pretty terrific these days but have had no desire to explore them. Why bother, when you've already got the best Linux distro installed and running like a top?

33. You got it
I'm only a few months into this linux world and I'm just blown away with the degree of customization I can do. I'm mostly playing with ubuntu 10.04 alpha and can't wait for it to be released as when it does I'm going to go with it as they are making some big changes that are making it faster at everything from booting up to the time I'm on it and the shutdown, all three. I'm on a slow dsl line here and any increase in speeding up my internet experience is greatly welcomed and it does that.

32. Been using Windows since 3.1 and I STILL wonder what everyone's talking about.
I'm currently using a five year old Gateway machine that runs Windows XP and laugh each and every time that the Windows/Mac wars get cranked up here.

Oh, I almost forgot... I used to teach Photoshop on Mac G-4's when they were brand new and must have had to restart them 50 times a day.

34. It's not
Microsoft, it's probably your anti-virus, usually Norton that causes these problems. Norton has caused more problems on computers than all of the six-ear olds downloading E-Pets combined.
