Complete and utter joke: Federal government has not yet shut down in DC Thursday.
Ridiculous. I can't get out no matter how hard I might try; not one single car has gone down my side street in Silver Spring today. Not one. What a joke. Doesn't matter; I can't get to work anyway, no matter what they do.

2. I heard that Montgomery county schools gave up on the rest of the week yesterday.
Surely the government can make a call for tomorrow?

7. The federal government has announced its closed in DC on Thursday
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 07:37 PM by onenote
announced at 6:50 PM.
Sure they could and probably should've announced it earlier, but in the great scheme of things, I don't think announcing it at 3 pm or 7 pm the day before would make that much of a difference in anyone's lives.

Heck, I'm still waiting for my (non-governmental) office to announce its closed. It has stayed open when the government has closed.

9. Thanks. About damned time. Ridiculous to wait this long.
They may as well close for Friday, too, because this is ridiculous.

10. Would you mind telling me what the phone number is for the Federal Government
DC's problems are the problems of any city, its day to day operation have little to nothing to do with the Federal Government. In DC there are many Agencies, some have critical missions, some do not - some are partically critical. Would you call them off in mass?

Think.

18. DC is not anywhere close to being prepared for this.
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 10:14 PM by amandabeech
You're city in West Virginia would undoubtedly do better.

DC can't even keep the snow emergency routes clear today.

Emergency vehicles are having real problems, and anything close to rush hour traffic is truly dangerous.

There are designated crucial positions that must be filled, and those people do come in.

Since almost all the agencies are in DC and the close in suburbs, when DC cannot remove the snow sufficiently for the buses to run and anything like normal traffic to proceed, it is the federal government's problem.

You need to visit some time during rush hour and imagine what it would be like with 40 inches of snow blowing around.

You think.

14. Wrong.
Message came through about 7:30. We're shut down. I wonder how long it will take before some wingnut starts bitching about "lazy Guvmint bureaucrats" having four days off at taxpayer expense?

17. If some workers can get to work why shut it down? Just don't penalize the ones who can't while

giving those who can a reward.
