The Snow Storm nonsense talking point on unemployment
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 11:55 AM by AllentownJake
I live in the mid-Atlantic. State offices were open and fully operational in PA 2 days after both storms.

The further north you go, the better they are at handling Snow. We are talking about a small region of the country, and as for construction jobs, It is February. Few places break ground in February anyway north of the Mason Dixon line. The ground is usually frozen. The normal statistical adjustment just as it is should be able to manage that.

Also if there has been a lull in hiring because of snow, there should have been a lull in pink slips as well. You have to come to work to have HR lay you off.

I am highly doubtful that the snow storm significantly impacted the monthly BLS phone survey numbers (which are silly and largely manipulated to begin with anyway).

I'm highly skeptical, however, if what they are saying has any truth in it.

The only way you will be able to tell is if the March numbers are an inverse of the February numbers. So if the February numbers on Friday are bad, the March numbers should be exceptionally good.

2. Your claims are both incorrect and inaccurate
Businesses and malls were closed for a record number of days in February.

9. Same here - people freak out and storm the grocery stores, which
really pisses me off because I need to go to the store tonite and pick up some cat food, and stand in line with paranoids who are stocking up on two-weeks worth of milk and bread for a snow that will be gone day after tomorrow.
