Pelosi: Say Goodbye To The Public Option
Ben Frumin | March 12, 2010, 11:35AM

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared the public option dead during a press briefing moments ago.

"We're talking about something that's not going to be part of the legislation," she said.

I'm quite sad that a public option isn't in there. But it isn't a case of it's not in there because the Senate is whipping against it. It's not in there because they don't have the votes to have it in there.

"We had it," Pelosi said. "We wanted it. They didn't have it. It's not in the reconciliation."

bwahahahahahahahahahahah -- the monti game just got a bit more frantic

Which shell is the public option under in the next round?

Swallowing hard was Durbin's talking point yesterday. This is sounding like an updated version of "Who's on first?"

32. No shit -- it would be funny if this wasn't such a desperate situation for millions
I still envision a bloodbath in November. I think BOTH sides deserve a good and proper ass-whooping for acting like kindergarden rejects.

8. She's saying she does not have the house votes to put in a public option. Where did
they go and why?

Maybe Massa was a lousy groper, but still right about Rahm's bullying? The two things are not mutually exclusive.

36. Good question -- I smell the rahminator on this one.
Notice how everyone gets all positive about doing something for the little guy, and when it gets close to *doing* it -- suddenly it's we haven't got the votes.

Stinks to high heavens.

2. We have Nancy Pelosi blaming the Senate and Dick Durbin blaming the House.
If Pelosi and Durbin really cared about passing a public option, then they would be fighting for it instead of giving up and blaming the other house of Congress.

10. No, Nancy's blaming the House and exonerating Durbin. What she says is
confusing because of double and triple negatives in her sentences. However, she is saying she does not have the votes in the House.

46. The House does not do super majorities. What don't you get?
Massa said as he was leaving that, without him, Rahm would have enough votes to pass health care "reform." Looks as though Massa was right about that, no matter how wrong Massa was (or wasn't) about his staffers.

My guess is the story about recent events around Reid's wife and daugter accident is not completly accurate. Right after that, Durbin comes out with no ammendment support, throws it to Pelosi.

And then she announces it is not in,

what else changed in last 24 hours?

6. Well, I could have told you that back in July when they started this
dog and pony show. All we can do is change the face of Congress in November. This plan modeled on the one Tom Daschle wanted and wrote a book on was the one that was going to be passed. It was predetermined. All that went on was just theater to make it look like they really were interested in choices.

108. True!
Here in Germany, the Social Democratic Party has become almost irrelevant. They are no longer the voice of the working people. It is difficult sometimes to distinguish them from the Christian Democrats any more. But thank goodness we have a Left Party and Green Party. Especially the Left Party has made gains in the recent past.

Edited on Sat Mar-13-10 10:34 AM by cascadiance
So much for placating the Blue Dogs to help them keep their seats! How about the progressives telling leadership, that in the process of becoming Republican as Rahm seems to be steering them to, the party is threatening THEIR seats in coming elections! And that WE as progressives need to be placated too!

Time for a new party folks! We need to make it happen. If we get to a tipping point, I think a lot of progressive Dem pols will jump on board to get away from the DINO DLC control over the party now.

And, yes...the Harry Reid's wife and daughter accident is a terrible thing. I hear the driver of the Semi is charged with "reckless driving."

106. My Democratic Senator, Blanche Lincoln, takes money...
From a MoveOn.org fundraising email:

Blanche Lincoln is one of the worst corporate Democrats in Washington. That's why 92 percent of Arkansas MoveOn members voted to support Bill Halter over Blanche Lincoln in a primary election. Instead of fighting for the health care reform Arkansas families desperately need, she took nearly a million ($866,000) from Big Insurance and HMO interests and then played a leading role in opposing the public health insurance option. She took $1.3 million from Wall Street banks and helped kill legislation that would've allowed struggling homeowners to stay in their homes. And she sponsored a bill to roll back the Clean Air Act to protect corporate profits. With Bill Halter, our Arkansas members see a candidate who will stand up to special interests. Arkansans deserve someone who'll fight for them, not Wall Street.

She took nearly a million from Big Insurance and HMO interests and then played a leading role in opposing the public health insurance option. Imagine that! I am working to unseat her here in Arkansas. She's not the only one. There are many like her in the Whitehouse. No wonder we the People are having a very hard time in America. It's a shame that many democrats are so weak. Money makes them weak. It's not that they're "spineless". They cannot resist money that corporations pour out of their windows.

43. Yet somehow we are supposed to pretend the bill will get "better" later on...
Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 12:56 PM by liberation
At least that is what the DLC types in this site keep parroting.

Yet, my spidey sense (AKA common sense) leads me to believe that if the Dems could not even manage to pass a legislation, with a public option which was as weak and compromised as the one proposed during this whole clusterfuck. Chances are they won't be able to do something much harder, like trying to actually transform this piece of shit bill into something decent later on, when there is guaranteed to be more inertia and more special interests have had plenty of time to work on strategies to neutralize any further improvement (I define improvement as something that helps the average American citizen, not a handful of private insurance companies).

I am just tired of progressives being proven correct, over and over and over again. Only to be berated, abused, insulted, and talked down with utter contempt and condescension by those who are wrong over and over and over again. And by the time we are proven correct on our initial assessment, the same DLC and "moderates" have moved on to greener pastures to shill for yet another catastrophe being shoveled down our throats, not even having the decency of acknowledging how wrong they have been.

At this point, being a progressive and supporting the Dem party... which now has been completely taken over by the DLC, it is an exercise in masochism. The DLC and the DNC apparatchik are not only no interested in any piece of legislation which could be construed as moderately progressive, they are almost down right hostile to progressives.

So again, why on earth I would continue to vote and enable an administration which has a president whose chief of staff considers liberals as being "retarded?"

You had better get ready to say "Goodbye" to a few things too, Nancy.

The "Public Option" was NEVER more than a shiny object dangled before the peasants to distract them while our "representatives" gave away the treasury to their RICH Corporate donors.

Admittedly, for a while there, I actually believed they were going to throw us a crumb.
But no, these greedy bastards are going to TAKE it ALL!
And at this point, there is NOTHING the MAJORITY of Americans who work hard everyday and try to do the RIGHT thing can do to stop them.

Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 04:34 PM by slipslidingaway
"...The "Public Option" was NEVER more than a shiny object dangled before the peasants to distract them while our "representatives" gave away the treasury to their RICH Corporate donors..."

:applause:

http://pnhp.org/blog/2010/03/06/wheelbarrow-parable/
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/slipslidingaway/301

"...If we substitute a health insurance industry bailout for the wheelbarrow, and the “option” for the straw, the parable illustrates the strategy of the “option” campaign. By creating a great ruckus over the “option” but all the while supporting bailout legislation (with or without an “option”), the “option” campaign has fooled its followers and the public into thinking its highest priority is the “option” when in fact its highest priority is a bailout.

In this three-part series, I summarize the evidence for this conclusion – that the “option” campaign cares more about the bailout than the “option.”

And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love won't stand the pain
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love...

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you

Now, could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
Yeah, I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holding on
The days are dull, the nights are long
Guess it's better to say

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Goodbye to you

Goodbye baby
So long darling
Goodbye to you"

42. Our government loves to adhere to an old saying.
If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with B.S.

It works on a certain percentage of people every time no matter how blatant their violation as representatives of the American people the deed is.

For those people who aren't dazzled or baffled, it's a giant shrug of their shoulders by our leaders followed by "we don't have the votes".

I have freaking had it with that excuse! A little backbone and a lot more integrity might have supplied the needed votes.

It's funny how the corporate lobbyists always manage to round up the votes to screw Americans thanks to so many politicians being bought and paid for.

If our politicians really wanted to pass meaningful HCR, maybe they shouldn't have let the corporations and their minions write so much of the legislation in the first place. Here's hoping that everyone on DU stays as healthy and employed as possible.

said that any bill he signs must include a public option. Now. He claims to be so committed to his faith that he can not endure the notion of other people having rights, so clearly he must be committed enough to be a man of his word rather than a full tilt liar. He will have to veto the bill, or his word is without value of any kind.

James Roosevelt, who was chair of the Rules and Bylaws Committee that decided to dock Michigan and Florida half of their delegates and award 4 of the delegates Clinton won in Michigan to Obama, as well as all of the uncommitted delegates, is the CEO of a health insurance company – Tufts Healthcare. Okay? Got that? The guy who made sure that Obama had the necessary to delegates to win the nomination – even to the point of assigning delegates another candidate won to him arbitrarily – is the CEO of a health insurance firm.
And what Roosevelt wants in a health insurance reform, is a reform that relies entirely upon private insurers. He does not want a public option. He wants a plan like Massachusetts has: http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2009/04/09/healthcare_lets_build_on_what_we_know/

Not only did many of us have our democratic votes stolen..they are now fucking us in our health "care"..and the health care of our children and grandchildren........we have been 100% sold out!

All the public option was good for was helping people that couldn't afford commercial insurance and to create incentives to limit the costs of health care.

It did nothing to increase the profits of corporations or to help the super rich that rule our country.

So good riddance I say.

Once again rich people prevail over non rich people. Her song that the votes aren't there is BS. This is just another example of them taking the progressive, liberal base of the party for granted. Keep it up and they will find differently. If nothing changes we need to do what we are doing with blue dog senators, we need to challenge Obama with a completely non apologetic fire brand liberal who speaks simple, unvarnished truth - and we have a few rising stars now that would fill that role nicely.

125. Unlimited corporate money, disenfranchised Democratic voters
Here's the math; They will get flattened and I don't care if many of them go. Corporatism is cemented. Election reform is moot- No wonder.

126. How long is it going to take before you accept that leadership doesn't WANT a PO
and does't give a fuck how many votes they have for it?

You hear rationalization after rationalization, and the house and senate leaders can even get their stories straight on why a PO cannot be voted.

Getting 40+ Senators to agree that they would vote for PO if it came up in reconciliation is easy, since none of them had to be on the hook to be the one making sure the provision got introduced as part of the reconciliation process...

One again, our leaders are delivering the illusion of change, and the illusion of being about the people's business all while carefully carrying out the interests of their financial backers.

137. What a surprise
:sarcasm: This is how most suspected it would play out. Nancy faces the progressives and lies, telling them "We tried, we really tried. I really want this too but we just can't have it. Progressives will just have to vote on it." It's a song and dance and they've been doing this for years. It's a scam and a lie. Nancy can shove it. Nice try at saving Durbin's sorry ass, but it won't work. His constituents know what's up.
