DU this poll.. say NO to teacher "merit" pay..
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/os-ed-poll-teacher-merit-pay-031210,0,6711271.poll

Merit pay is just another way to shift money away from urban and rural schools in difficult academic situations that need the money the most TO affluent suburban schools where it is needed the least. It is punishing teachers and students of underfunded schools for not performing at the same level as the affluent schools do when they don't have the same resources that those schools do - it's yet another reverse Robin Hood way of destroying universal public education.

Merit pay just makes teaching a political game, it has nothing at all to do with teaching.

6. I voted yes.
I disagree with the "every teacher is a good teacher" mindset - within in any given school, the best should be rewarded and the worst should be put on notice (with remedial help available) that their performance is not good enough.

11. Sorry, I have to agree with President Obama on this one.
Good teachers should be paid more than bad teachers.

12. But THAT is the LIE right there.. They really are NOT better teachers..
they just have better support from parents and better resources available to them and students who grew up in a much more supportive environment.

This is the classic Republican claim about how "they hit a triple" when in fact they were born on third base.

It is embarrassing that Obama should buy into this crap.

13. You are so right, and don't forget about the politics involved.
I've seen mediocre teachers receive the best class assignments because they knew how to "play the game" or work the system.

So much depends on the integrity of the administrators.
