I Love This CNN Headline: "Evangelical Leader Takes On beck"
Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 04:29 PM by Dinger
http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/03/12/beck.boycott/index.html?hpt=C1

"(CNN) -- An evangelical leader is calling for a boycott of Glenn Beck's television show and challenging the Fox News personality to a public debate after Beck vilified churches that preach economic and social justice.

The Rev. Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, a network of progressive Christians, says Beck perverted Jesus' message when he urged Christians last week to leave churches that preach social and economic justice.

Wallis says Beck compared those churches to Communists and Nazis.

Wallis says at least 20,000 people have already responded to his call to boycott Beck. He says Beck is confusing his personal philosophy with the Bible."

Sorry if this a dupe, but even if it is, I think it's worth of another thread.

1. Excellent and what I have been waiting to see...
The "REAL" Christian leaders need to get out there and be vocal or lose, forever the true meaning of Christianity based on Jesus's teachings.

4. This battle was lost long ago!
The majority of American Christians are the exact opposite of what Jesus taught...Most American Christians agree with Beck & the GOP ideology of open hatred toward homosexuals, anti-choice, anti-climate change, anti-science & anti-helping your fellow American. The only reason most Christians help human beings outside America is for converts.

5. The majority of "self-professed" American Christians perhaps
There is a difference and the unempowered majority takes great offense at their having co-opted "Christianity." Arguably these self-proclaimed types are simply NOT. You don't help them to recapture the tenets of Jesus by lumping them in with these exploitative and hypocritical Xians.

6. "...unempowered majority"????
Do you honestly believe the "majority" of American Christians fall into this group you labeled the "...unempowered majority"?

If so, then where have they been and why are they not out publicly defending their brand of Christianity if they truly feel it has been co-opted by a radical minority?

8. Maybe because they walk the walk instead of using politics
to push their exploitative agendas? Why do you think the xian right got into politics to begin with. They weren't even anti-abortion decades ago, until they realized that it was a hot button issue to gain power through their political alliances. There are plenty of progressive Christian faiths, denominations, churches. They are apolitical as their understanding of Christianity instructs them to be. That doesn't mean they don't have vocal advocates, but since when does the press put on the likes of the Reverend Welton Gaddy (President of The Interfaith Alliance) or other moderate figures on tv? Advocating for the poor certainly does not make one welcome in our corporate driven media.

19. True!
The irony is most religious leaders agreed with Roe v Wade when it happened! The true reason the religious right jumped into politics was the federal government telling them they had to allow African Americans into their Universities...Then Bob Jones University said any mixed race dating would mean expulsion. So, the Carter Admin pulled their Tax Free Status and that started this whole mess! Of course, they knew right away their racist views would not get them far so they chose abortion as their wedge issue...Now it gays, abortion, stem cells and of course science (Evolution).

America is at a cross roads...Are we going to fall back on religion and watch the world (Especially CHINA!!!)go by or do what is right? We will see?

17. Oh really???
Is it possible that you are emotionally attached to Christianity and that has blinded you from reality?

Either way, we must boil down why you think my post was "bunk"...Let me ask you a few questions that you may not have even considered in your world...

In your world does the majority of Christians vote Democrat or Republican?

In your world does the majority of Christians (Not overall opinion but just American Christians)in America support a woman's right to choose?

In your world does the majority of Christians in America think same sex marriage should be legal?

In your world does the majority of Christians accept the fact that all life evolved on planet Earth?

In your world does the majority of Christians in America think Creationism should be taught as an equally qualified scientific theory along side the Theory of Evolution?

In your world does the majority of Christians in America think human beings were created by a god between 6000-10,000 years ago in their present form?

In your world does the majority of Christians think torture of suspected terrorist is ok?

After going over these basic questions...If you still feel my post is "bunk" then I will be waiting to hear why and especially your answers to these questions!

HINT: Do some research before you answer...Emotional responses may make one feel good but an acceptance of reality is much much healthier.

I will say this...I love America but America is not this Liberal leaning country many here on DU think it is! We are a fundamentally religious country that leans or is firmly to the right on almost all issues! Again, if you think I am wrong please tell me how? I would love to see the evidence supporting a Liberal America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. You should have heard Beck lying about his comments on his radio show today.
That's not what I said. They're lying. Then he'd read selected parts of a transcript to claim that he only said if you're in Jeremiah Wright's churchg you should leave. I wonder of the people who listen to him have the sense to go back and listen to what he said.

If Beck debates Wallis, Beck will only lie about what he said anyway. This stuff wouold be funny if it wasn't so dangerous.

10. Just asked our church custodian to change our sign to this,
or as close as possible. I think our sign is a bit smaller than that one.

12. If Beck gets cancelled (or even reprimanded) over this...
it'll show exactly where the real power in America lies - Christian fundies. Millions of other ideologies may protest against Beck, but Christian victimhood may be too much for Beck and Fox to withstand. Good times.
