Children Spot Dog While Walking To School
POSTED: 3:44 pm CDT March 30, 2010

CLARINDA, Iowa -- Authorities are investigating the discovery of a frozen dog chained to a tree in Clarinda.

Children on their way to school spotted the St. Bernard on March 3 along East Clark Street.

The St. Bernard had died in a curled position tethered to a tree with three feet of chain and no shelter, said Clarinda Police Department and Southwest Iowa Humane Society investigators. The dog was frozen to the ground, and had to be dislodged before a necropsy could be conducted, investigators said.

The dog was first reported dead on Feb. 21, but animal control officers were unable to find the dog due to blowing snow.

6. In mine, too.
How anyone could let this happen is beyond me. But there are certainly idiots out there who don't give a damn about their animals. I've simply never understood WHY they want to have them if they do not care about them.

3. EVIL.
I can't imagine such cruelty. I think how much I love and miss my departed doggie, how much joy and companionship she gave me...it breaks my heart to hear about animals being abused.

4. Looks like a young dog and only about 20 feet from the home's back door. I still
prefer the company of animals to people.

5. OMG!
I live in California, where it NEVER gets THAT cold, and yet my outside dogs STILL have enclosed and insulated dog houses for year round use, and I open the doggie door to the garage (which has a small heater) when it nears freezing.

What kind of uncaring a****le would chain a dog to a tree in the SNOW?!!

11. Gawd, sometimes an "eye for an eye" justice is so appealing.
Chain these fucking "owners" to a tree in the snow and let's see how they fare. :grr:

I have a Nordic dog (American Eskimo), that absolutely LOVES the cold and snow. Through most of the year he is in his covered kennel outside, but I bring him in for weather under 30 degrees and over 90. Doesn't matter if your blocking out the sun or rain or wind. Animals can take it a bit more extreme then humans can, but not THAT extreme without getting sick or dying. People are dumb.

17. Correct
Two months ago, I passed a dog in the middle of the road, obviously injured and unable to do much more than lift its head. It was obviously alive. There were two cars in front of me, they never even slowed down.

I stood in the middle of the road with the dog for an hour waiting for a friend to come help me load the dog into my jeep. Traffic passed me on both sides, including law enforcement and no one stopped to offer help.

I got the dog to the nearest vet clinic and when they took xrays, found it had a broken spine. The dog had no collar and no ID. Long story short, I had the dog euthanized, paid the bill and cried all the way home.

Sometimes, I really hate people.

22. That poor soul. If he hadn't been chained, he might have found shelter.
What a horrible way to die.
Didn't ANYONE hear his cries of agony?
Was he in such a remote area that NO one saw or heard him?

Please pass the tissue, this makes me cry.

Who would do such a thing to a helpless creature?

25. Feb. 21 to Mar. 3... that's 10 days
Ten days between the first report of a dead dog and the children finding him??? The owners left a dead dog in the backyard for that long? If it was just misjudgment that the fur was protection enough in this weather, I don't think they would've left him out there dead that long. There's more going on.

I hope this case is pursued and not forgotten.

I agree with all the comments of shock, horror and disgust. I feel so much anger toward whoever is responsible for the neglect of this beautiful and noble dog.
:grr:

26. Maybe it shows a general picture of negligence
that they couldn't be bothered to take away the dead dog. It's an extra detail that adds to the disgust of the story.

This is the saddest story I've read all day.
