Destruction of new iPAD draws criticism
Edited on Wed Apr-07-10 03:20 PM by Liberal_in_LA
**video of iPAD beating at link***

Direct link to the youtube video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGUppxoJUVg

Teen's wanton destruction on iPad goes viral on YouTube The destruction of an freshly purchased iPad for no apparent reason except "because it was there" has drawn a lot of criticism.

The comments at the video (below) range from:

"Proof that America's youth is spoiled rotten. Think they would be beating this ipad to death if they had actually paid for it themselves ?"

"Agree with shogunz. They are such spoiled f*cks. And that's what's messed up about our world, everyone cares about themselves. It's the fact that they would destroy $500 and not give it to a good cause. Or even keeping the money would have been better than wasting it like that."

---------------

It's true, however, that the family is obviously rich. The person in question, 19-year-old Justin Kocott of Pittsburgh, PA said his family donated $10 - 15,000 to the Make a Wish Foundation in 2009. They also bought two other undestroyed iPads. As he added, though:

I knew some people would hate it, but I didn't think that many people would hate it. A lot of people are leaving really bad comments.

12. True...
but as we live in an area plagued with wealthy, dumbass rich kids there does seem to be a trend of extreme wastefulness within that demographic.

20. I don't think I can agree with that.
For much of history, the rich have been miserly.

Wanton waste or destruction such as this would have at least brought reprimand or punishment.

To "waste" money on an elaborate wedding or extravagant purchase is a different matter than wanton wastefulness that produces no kind of benefit.

Then again, maybe this is the difference between the truly wealthy and the nouveau riche.

25. I worked as a bartender in a place that served these twenty somethings
from the West End of LA, you know, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Westwood, Santa Monica, Bel Air and Beverly Hills. These were the most destructive brats around and with no apologies. They had no respect for their own stuff either, leaving behind $500 jackets, burning cigarette holes in them and not giving a damn and other acts of showing that they could destroy anything they wanted to. Daddy would always get them new ones.

34. I think your last line is spot on
Just in my personal observations, it is almost 90% or better the nouveau riche that I've witnessed behaving this way.

I've also had the chance at horse shows to watch the reaction of the old wealth to these antics/spoiled actions of the nouveau riche. While there have certainly been offspring of old wealth that behave just as badly, it is not nearly as rampant as it is with these new generations of NR. Most of them can't understand what motivates so many NR to act in such a destructive, wasteful way.

To have the majority of your wealth wasted, simply for the sake of the act of destroying it, isn't what made them "old wealth", and likely many of these NR won't be passing on enough to make their families part of the "old wealth".

I will use that as a quote "Sometimes a dumbass is just a dumbass"

Not everything has a meaning. Not everything is a sign. Not everything is a reflection upon an entire generation.

she works in electronics manufacturing with a particular interest in component pricing and assembly, they do it both for R+D and business purposes. "Our competitors product has a component cost of $100, a 4 layer circuit board and six chips and a margin of 30% at retail and I think the board is a Conexant reference design we too could license."

32. the same thing that they'd do with the $500 that many people spend on art supplies
or the even larger amounts that someone like Christo spends to wrap a building. Or the same thing that they'd do with the $500 that many people spend on internet access so they can fret about things like this online.

Heck, its pretty much the same thing that a homeless person would do with the $500 or more that many people spend over the course of a year on their daily dose of starbucks when they probably could get a cup of joe for a lot less somewhere else.

As long as the kid didn't destroy one that didn't' belong to him why should anyone care?

36. you shouldn't
The kid thought that videoing himself destroying an iPAD would be interesting. Its no different than any other form of performance art imo. Is it a waste? Probably. But so is a lot of failed art. Was it a waste when Jimi Hendrix, or Pete Townshend or Kurt Cobain destroyed guitars as part of their performances? In a sense yes and in a sense no. If some teenager in a bar band does the same thing is it any more or less a waste?
