We offered some affordable health care services outside today's Palin/Bachmann rally in Minneapolis
When we heard that Sarah Palin was coming to Minneapolis to host a rally and fund raiser for Michele Bachmann we knew that we needed to give them both a warm Minnesota welcome. Bachmann was traveling outside her own district in the northern suburbs to spend some time in the Twin Cities and we thought that it was important that we could provide an important service for her while she was away from home.

We wanted to find a way in which we could welcome Palin and Bachmann to Minneapolis and provide them with a much needed service at the same time so we thought about some of the things that Minnesota is known for. While our state is famous for our lakes, the Mall of America, Prince, and our sports franchises none of these things really seemed like something we could use to give an appropriate welcome to Palin and Bachmann. My friend Coleen came up with the perfect Minnesota themed welcome however when she reminded us that Peanuts creator Charles Schulz was born in Minneapolis and grew up right next door in St. Paul.

Because Peanuts has its roots in the Twin Cities the comic strip has long been an important part of Minnesota culture. If you walk around the city of Saint Paul you regularly see statues of Snoopy or Charlie Brown, and until it was bought out by Nickelodeon a few years ago we even had an amusement park centered around Peanuts here at one time. While there is plenty of Peanuts memorabilia around the Twin Cities Coleen realized that we were missing one important thing, to the best of our knowledge there has never been a replica of Lucy's Psychiatric Help booth anywhere in the Twin Cities.

It was the perfect idea, not only would we be able to greet Palin with an iconic Minnesota image but we would be able to provide Bachmann and her supporters with a much needed service as well. We knew what we had to do, we needed to recreate Lucy's psychiatry booth and offer those who went to the rally with psychiatric help for the low cost of five cents. We thought that even though Palin and Bachmann support a health care system in which it costs thousands of dollars to get psychiatric help, even they would appreciate our low cost health care services. It may not have been the single payer system that we would like, but at least Lucy was on the right track towards making health care more affordable.

We set up our psychiatric booth directly across the street from the main entrance to the Minneapolis Convention Center. Because time was limited we were not able to find the best materials for costumes so we had to make Lucy a red head and we had to go without our Charlie Brown, but we did what we could to make a Peanuts themed event. I played Pigpen, and while I was not able to get the cloud of dust to appear around me as it does in the cartoon I did roll around in the mud a bit before the event to make myself dirty. I didn't know if people would get that I was Pigpen, but I made a sign that said “War Makes Me Feel Dirty” so I could at least make sure that rolling around in the mud was worth it.

One Palin/Bachmann supporter said to me “If it wasn't for the war in Iraq you would not have the freedom to hold that sign.” I informed him that the war in Iraq was not fought to protect our free speech rights but he did not want to listen, he started yelling at me “the only opinion that matters to you is your own, you are trying to prevent others from speaking their opinion!” I tried to explain to him that I had no problem with other people speaking their opinion but he insisted I did, I don't think he could quite grasp the irony that he was telling me not to express my opinion while simultaneously insisting that I did not want to hear any opinions different than my own.

Most of the Palin/Bachmann supporters were not eager to obtain our low cost psychiatric care, instead they turned their heads and tried desperately not to look at us. I am guessing they must not be fans of Peanuts.

While we were unable to provide services to many Palin/Bachmann supporters we hope that we at least made them aware that there is help available to them, all they have to do is realize that Lucy had a much better health care plan than Palin or Bachmann would ever allow them to have.

It's a great slogan.

8. You would be shocked how many people actually do believe that...
I hear it all the time, "they are fighting for our freedom". It is an easy slogan for them to repeat over and over again, but none of them have put even the slightest bit of thought into it. If you ask them to explain how the war in Iraq had anything to do with freedom of speech they quickly want to change subjects, just as the guy I encountered today did. When I told him that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with free speech he just started going off about how I don't want to hear anyone's opinion besides his own. They recite their talking points as if they were fact but then get outraged when anyone questions the factual basis behind them, it is far easier for them to hold such an absurd view if they are never challenged to explain the logic behind that view.

21. My own winger sister gives me that tripe--and I'm a disabled Gulf vet!
She'll ask me shit like: Well, Roz, would you rather Saddam be still in power? Then I tell her how the real local power brokers in Iraq are the area war lords and how yells of "You killed Saddam and gave us a hundred Saddams!" follow GIs everywhere. Does she get it? No. Not in a million years. She's says she's proud to have a sister that fought for her country. I tell her Exxon is grateful, too.

51. Your mistake is completely understandable and easily made.
You asked them a question (ask them to explain how the war in Iraq had anything to do with freedom of speech ) that was both compound (i.e. had more than one thought in it) and demanded synthesis and generalization.

Help a poor Teahadist out. Throw them a bone and break those long complex questions down. By making your questions to them respectfully short and easy to understand you help them to either get to an answer based in reality on their own, or you can really make them squirm.

For example, instead of "ask(ing) them to explain how the war in Iraq had anything to do with freedom of speech," you should break it down into several questions. First, ask them to tell you which freedom is being fought for. As they struggle with this, and they will because any thought process for them is akin to trying to get the engine of an old farm truck that has been slowly rusting to dust in a field for 50 years started. It will be a wee bit creaky and slow at first, help them by supplying a list of freedoms for them to choose from (you know how they like standardized tests). Try saying slowly "speach." and see where it gets you.

If they grab onto that then go onto the second qeustion. At this point they will probably react with anger and distrust, suspecting that you are making fun of them or trying to trick them. Be understanding. Realize that they have spent their life being made fun of because of their slow and muddled thought processes. It took them 50 years to figure out that people have been mocking them for most of their lives, but not that they have they rightfully resent it. So be supportive and empathetic. How would you feel if you were dumber than a sack of hammers for 50 years and only now figured that out? So after reasuring them ask them who is fighting for the freedom of speach.

When they respond with "our soldiers you commie loving american hating librul scum - snort - froth - grunt - snort," you can start by praising the soldiers - all brave and true sons and daughers of America. It might help it if you start to sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic at this point. I know it is totally unrelated, but they like the song and they are conditioned to sing along to it so they will join you and not even know why. It will just make them feel good and should bond you with them. After the last chorus go directly back to praising the soldiers and then ask them if they support the soldiers. When they say, "hell yes," make sure that you interupt them before they continue like one of pavlovs dogs with the entire commie librul rant again and just shout out "ME TOO!!!!!!!" While they are still dazed by this unexpected turn of events, trying to shake off their conditioning, you can ask the 3rd part of your original question but with a twist. "Shouldn't our soldiers be fighting for our freedom instead of Iraqi freedom?" If they seem confused, and they may add this "dontcha think?"

Remember the K.I.S.S. rule when dealing with teahadists; Keep It Simple (for the) Stupid.

25. I saw that -
This was just great.

I was watching the news reports on their rally and just had the hardest time that all those wing nuts were here in Minnesota. I suppose that's because I'm old enough to remember when Republicans in the state were not just sane, but were also decent people who had a sense of the common good and wanted to live in a state we could all be proud of.

At least the local media gave the protests some coverage; they showed the one at the capital with Keith Ellison as well as the one you went to.

I'm in the Twin Cities right now. I'm actually from Chicago, but we are visiting the Twin Cities for the 5th straight year -- a trip to the MOA and the Park there (I still miss when it was Camp Snoopy, but my daughter loves it no matter what it's called). We didn't know about the Bachmann/Palin thing until after we got here, but we actually saw Sean Hannity's bus parked at a hotel a few blocks away from ours.

I was considering getting a closer look at it, only after I visited a local grocery for a dozen eggs.

I was offered a really nice studio gig in Minneapolis a few years back. Was there a few days and the thing that impressed me most (other than the Mall of America) was how nice everyone is. People you didn't know went out of their way to do anything they could for you. Michael Bland (Princes old drummer) hosted weekly jams, and all was great. How in the ding dong heck you all wound up with that nutjob is beyond me! I would have loved to move there but it's just TOO COLD!

63. Sadly, Prince may not have been so inappropriate
I hear he's gone all Tea Party on us (I originally typed "teabagger", but that would have been less surprising). Tragic really, speaking as a former fan. But I agree that this image is far more appropriate.

He's been known to donate to Rethugs.

He gave to Wellstone's first opponent.

70. Not surprising in itself
There has always been a religious element to his songs, and some of his best work was born out of the tension between his religious beliefs and his raging libido. I suppose it should have been entirely predictable that as he got older and his libido waned, he would turn into Pat Boone. Me, I'd rather remember him as he was circa Sign O'the Times.

He does have that underlying theme to some of his music. I also prefer his older stuff. :D

A) Trying to save the Titanic by bailing out water with a Dixie cup.

B) Trying to circumnavigate the globe in a old inner tube.

C) Trying to make fighting windmills look worthwhile.

D) Trying to make Mother Theresa look selfish.

E) Trying to get Lindsay Lohan into rehab.

F) Trying to tell Dick Cheney he needs a soothing bath in tub full of Preparation H.

G) Trying to get Rush Limbaugh to say something intelligent.

H) Adding a new meaning to the word "futility."

I) All of the above.

J) All of the above, plus a lot more that I didn't have time for.

66. "and how long have you been feeling this way?" or "do you feel everyone wants to take your ...
free speech rights away?" might be a good response to such paranoid ramblings.
