Even though I've not served a day in Iraq or Afghanistan, the constant slog of turning on the news, hearing about the latest casualties, and--worst of all--the "military analysts" chewing over What It Means, leaves me physically drained.
I'm not alone: A female friend, who loves to jog in the evening, has told me that she's oft-times come home from a run, only to be deflated, stripped of her energy by the reportage of futility.
We are ALL weary, are we not? It's time to end this disastrous Experiment in Empire! No matter what happens in Iraq, bring the troops home ON SCHEDULE, I don't CARE if they degenerate into civil war! On Afghanistan, it's really not our business if the Taliban returns to power after our departure: There are brutal regimes all over the world. It is not our job to police them! Just get the hell out of that hole, while truncating the despots with surgical strikes, that al Qaeda may not regain a staging area there.
Iran? Let the Israelis take care of the situation. They are more than capable! America must adopt a stringent hands-off policy, no matter what the Cheneys or the Kristols or the Limbaughs say.
George McGovern's words on that late summer night, so very long ago, have never been more applicable and appropriate.
Come Home, America!
