The South Shall Rise Again

One hundred and forty-five years later my southern kin are still fighting the War Between the States. Give it up, loves. We lost. Just like you, not me, lost the presidential election in 2008. An African-American is our president. Get over it.

And just like my other southern-born-and-raised kissin'-cuzzins, we've known since day one that all this shoutin' and hollerin' on the extreme right is nothing but pure naked racism disguised as anger over taxes and
galloping socialism. We've known better when social scientists and political pundets denied the existence of racism in the Tea Party movement.

We've known better when Tea Bagger activists claimed they weren't racist. We've seen it too often. "I'm not racist," they protest looking you straight in the eye. And in the next breath, "Ain't that monkey ever gonna get me ma drink?"

Not to be outdone, elected representatives of all the people are getting into the act. Chafing at the bit since 1964, or 1865, they're gonna win that damn war once and for all.

1. In some ways the South has already risen, Detroit is dead and auto plants in the South are alive and
thriving.

10. Enough with the blanket statements of bigotry.
Stop acting like the north is free of racism and every person in the south is nothing but a racist. Your statements reek of ignorance and intolerance. Grow a little, be a real progressive and show you can see people in something other than black and white issues.

5. I think NY and NJ and New England would love being part of Canada.
Maine can just STFU and like it. The same for the West Coast. They get Alaska because there aren't enough people living there to object.

Let the South have the Red States. Anyone who needs to shift around can have their moves subsidized in a final Federal act and then let these idiots go. They have no science or ability to think critically, that's why the rest of us have to spend our tax dollars keeping them functioning.

Give them the United (red) States and let the South rise again with it's capitol Texas.

12. paulsby, as much as i admire the independent spirit you talk of,
in general, humanity really has to start thinking in ways of joining with together with those who are mature enough to place a premium on working together and cooperating. the earth's natural resources and our growing proximity to each other because of overpopulation will almost require it someday soon, if not now. i don't put a premium on an independent spirit when people acting as lone wolves only consider themselves and not the impact of what they do on others, and who consider helping or being helped a weakness. It's kind of a macho, cowboy viewpoint that doesn't serve us well today in the world we live in with the problems we have.

13. i'm speaking purely statistically
iow, regardless of whether you think it would be a good thing IF people in NY and new england wanted to part o' canada, i am pretty confident that most would not

personally, i like canada, a lot. i visist frequently. but i prefer our system, and there are certain freedoms that i would not want to give up (speech, RKBA etc.) to become a part of canada. i also don't like that they can overturn basic protections with parliamentary override. etc.

i would suggest most canadians would not want to be sucked into the US and vice versa.

i do prefer their health care system, though.

21. I love Maine so even though they keep electing republicans, I think they....
should also become part of Canada. If they really want to go red they would have to commute.

8. A conversation from a few years ago...
Edited on Mon Apr-12-10 02:24 PM by Javaman
I live and work in Austin, however, I'm originally from the northeast. I've had people ask me here if I was a Yankee. Taken back, I didn't know exactly what they meant, but at the time, I replied, "well, I'm a Yankee fan if that's what you mean". Later on, it dawned on me that the guy was serious. I found out later he didn't care much for my response. Oh, well, fuck him.

Anyway, I digress. A little over a year ago, a buddy of mine and I were joking around at work, during our little back and forth, another person walk into the conversation. My buddy states, in mock seriousness, "the south shall rise again!" I reply, "you me like zombies?" We both cracked up, the other guy, very red neck, blurts out, "that's not funny!"

Once again, my buddy and I look at each other and start cracking up. The other guy, gets all red in the face and stomps off.

Some people are so fucked up, I swear.
