Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry vetoes anti-abortion measures

Governor Brad Henry vetoed two anti-abortion bills today, including one requiring women seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound examination.

He vetoed a bill with a similar provision two years ago; legislators overrode that veto, and a court threw out the law before it could go into effect.

This time, Henry said the bill had numerous flaws and would ultimately result in another expensive and possibly futile legal battle for the state.

Henry today also vetoed a bill that would have banned lawsuits that claim a baby would have been better off aborted.

2. He's a moderate democrat
He's slightly to the left of the more typical blue dog in Oklahoma. Not nearly as conservative as Congressman Dan Boren, who I wish someone would slap the shit out of. Henry is about as moderate a dem can be and still get elected here. He upset Steve Largent six years ago in a bit of a fluke caused by a one-issue third party candidate. Then was reelected because he had some success bringing gaming to the state... and even Oklahoma couldn't go for Ernest Istook in the governor's mansion.

3. That last line is hard to follow, but I will try.
"Henry today also vetoed a bill that would have banned lawsuits that claim a baby would have been better off aborted."

Let's see if this action is pro- or anti-choice.

"Lawsuits that claim a baby would have been better off aborted" would seem to be pro-choice.

Therefore, "a bill that would have banned" such lawsuits must be anti-choice.

Thus when "Henry today also vetoed" such a bill, he was being pro-choice.

Did I get that right?

6. "wrongful life" lawsuits.....
Let's say a woman goes to a doctor who is anti-choice.

She has tests that reveal she is carrying a severely defective child.

Doctor tells her everything is fine, because he fears she would abort if she knew the truth....

In many jurisdictions, woman would be able to sue for extrodinary costs of raising said child.
