It seems like technically everyone now has to have a passport (kids through adults) and carry it with them if they live in or are passing through AZ. As soon as someone reasonable thinks you look suspicious you have to be able to present papers ie a passport. Isn't this almost more like a national ID move?

1. John would have problems... He was born in panama,
so birth certificate won't work.

Any person of any ethnic background can be here illegally so its seems anyone could be picked up and better have a passport with them.

6. This isn't about illegal immigrants from those countries.
It isn't even really about illegal immigrants, it is about assessing blame.

9. Valid point.
Here in Cleveland, we have a HUGE population of Russian immigrants. Are most here legally? You're guess is as good as mine... Can you look into a crowded grocery store and pick out the Russians? Doubtful; they look just like any other white person around here.

And as far as that goes, I can't tell you how many times I have been asked if I'm a "Hunky".

27. My grandparents came from Slovenia prior to 1912... we are still accused of having a "foreign" name.

Less than 20 years ago, people actually quit our church when a new minister was hired who was of Polish descent and had a name ending in "ski". This was in Pennsylvania.

And many Eastern Europeans don't have what is (for lack of a better word) the marketable mainstream look that other Europeans have.

I used to work in the theatre and I know this first-hand. I, and most of the other slavic-descent actors I knew, only got character roles offered if/when hired at all, not leads. Many Jewish actors have a similar problem.

There are lots of people who may be technically white but somehow there is still something "ethnic" about them. I am sure some of these folks will be targeted under a law like AZ.

7. Voter registration card will suffice.
So will a social security card. A concealed carry permit card should do it too. An AZ driver's license will work, but possibly not a CA one.

26. Was it an AZ license?
One assumes that under the new law, AZ will not issue DLs to illegals, so one would think that an AZ license would work. Since some states do issue DLs to illegals, an out-of-state DL may not work.

I agree that on the information presented the situation described appears to be rather stupid.

14. My understanding was it needed to be a passport, birth certificate
or papers - a drivers licence or id doesn't suffice. A social security card plus a drivers license with a picture ID together probably would.

and hearing some expert advise that you should never carry your social security card with all your other stuff.

12. Or, Jan Brewer?
Or, anyone else in the state legislature? I hope some cop asks them for their papers.

Good point on the national ID move. I hope the Dems have enough sense to bring that up. IIRC, the wingnuts are opposed to such a thing.

21. Just read the bill
I just read the bill (http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf) and the law appears silent on the acceptable means of identification. My guess is they will either use the same requirements as those necessary to get an AZ driver's license under the primary form of ID (http://mvd.azdot.gov/mvd/formsandpub/viewPDF.asp?lngProductKey=1410&lngFormInfoKey=1410) or will use Federal requirements if there are any.

There are also penalties for employers who knowingly employ illegal aliens or fail to make a good faith effort to identify if an employee is an illegal alien. Specifically a first offense results in a revocation of any license necessary to operate a business at THAT SPECIFIC business address (emphasis mine) for no less then 10 days, more under specified conditions. A second offense results in a permanent revocation of the license.

24. If the law isn't specific as to acceptable ID, whatever a brown person has on them won't be good
Sorta like birth certificates and black presidents, no documentation will be accepted by somebody who just doesn't think you have a right to be where you are.

As to employers, that is a federal requirement and has been for quite some time. We ALWAYS had to have two photo IDs and a social security card or SS card, one photo IDs & two other IDs when we hired back in early 90s. And some white people would holler and scream that we were violating their privacy; they were fine with brown people having to provide documentation, but some sure as hell did not understand that all had to be treated equally!
