jeez, I just unrolled a top of norway sardines in mustard sauce and there are two, count them, two, pieces of fish that look like little filets.

I guess that food supply is gone, gone, gone.

2. You're right it was Maine...I think a place called Bar Harbor?
when I was a kid my mom would tell me "the oceans can feed everyone in the world forever". Probably most people believed it back then.

8. It was in Prospect Harbor - not Bar Harbor - and I eat them all the time.
There are Bar Harbor brand sardines but they are caught and packed in Canada.

The ones in the wine sauce are wicked good though...

6. Yeah, and thirty years ago Maine alone had at least three
and sixty years ago there were many more on both coasts. Monterey's "Cannery Row" was sardine canning.

9. Almost the last year round employer up here!
My son worked there for a while & I still have a stack of
cans in the cupboard.
Sad part is..up here in this area ( 4th poorest county in the
country) the sense of community and the joy is palpable!
Tragically 2 local fishermen were lost last week, there was a
benefit dinner for one of the widows, in the school gymn
Friday night...everyone came. I haven't seen a crowd like this
since I lived in Philly! There were tears ahd hugs, and humor
too.......
My friend spent her last $2.00 on raffle tickets, & will
make do without eggs or milk until pension arrives next week!
The son will go out in his Father's boat, ( only the skiff
was lost in the accident) &get crabs and his Mother will
be in the shack picking them next week to earn money, it's
just what one does.

During the 2004, & 2008 elections, the mood was very
contentious, but most have awakened & figured out what
happened.
( Bush won the 2004 in this town!) Obama in 2008. There are
teabaggers but they are out numbered by common sense folks.
We are pulling together pooling our resources, &
supporting each other with love.

3. I remember squeezing a tbsp of oil out of a can of tuna. Now it's more like half a cup.

10. Yeah, and you do have to keep on squeezing......
I remember what used to be just plain tuna is now considered "solid albacore tuna" and now even the stuff labeled "solid albacore tuna" is similar to catfood. Except for the StarKist brand, which of course, is THE most expensive.

which is why the fish used to be so tightly packed

7. The last can of tuna
Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 02:16 PM by necso
(albacore in water; the kind with the chuck of tuna, not the "tuna" mush) I bought had a "plug" of tuna in it that didn't reach halfway up the can (an older, larger can).

I was like: Wtf? How can they call it "tuna in water" when the tuna is less than half the contents? Shouldn't it be "water with tuna"?

Then I perused the ingredients: Tuna, water, vegetable broth.

What's next: Tuna, water, vegetable broth, raw sewage extract?

I am reminded of the Simpson's classic: "Hydrogenated petroleum oil, monosodium poisonate, partially de-weaponized plutonium".

12. No, next will be hydrogenated petroleum oil, MSP, cyanide, PDP...
and THEN tuna. In mush form, of course.

15. I eat them all the time. I haven't noticed any change.
Keep in mind, some are packed single layer (larger fish) and some double layer (smaller fish). I prefer the smaller ones, but both are good.

Rye bread, mustard, big onion slice, lotsa sardines.

mmmmMMMMMmmmm!
