'Gay dog' refused entry to Australian restaurant

(AFP) – 14 hours ago

SYDNEY — An Australian restaurant that refused a blind man entry because a waiter thought his seeing-eye dog was "gay" has been ordered to apologise and pay compensation.

Ian Jolly was told he could not take guide dog Nudge into Adelaide's Thai Spice last May because a member of staff objected, The Sunday Mail reported.

The restaurant's owners said a misunderstanding had arisen between Jolly's female companion and a waiter who understood the woman "to be saying she wanted to bring a gay dog into the restaurant".

"The staff genuinely believed that Nudge was an ordinary pet dog which had been desexed to become a gay dog," the owners said in a statement to South Australia's Equal Opportunity Tribunal.

27. Sexual orientation is not based on whether or not you have testicles.
If a man had his removed due to cancer, I am sure he still has some sort of orientation.

Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 11:00 PM by azurnoir
but your in good company the medical profession will remove a women's ovaries in the drop of a hat not so with testicles though

eta your right the orientation may remain at least in human's but the ability to act on it is somewhat limited however we were talking about dogs

32. ummmmmm, no they won't. Her uterus perhaps, but no, they won't remove ovaries "in the drop of a hat"
And no, having testes or ovaries is not what determines sexual orientation. Neither is "being able to act on it is somewhat limited".

Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 11:17 AM by uppityperson
The only time I've seen oophs happen is if the doctor or pathologist thought there was a severe need.

Asking someone to sign a consent while under the influence of drugs is illegal, unethical and immoral. Just plain wrong.

Edited to clarify my last sentences.

34. Urrrr, no.
I SO wanted to have my internal reproductive parts removed when I was in my early 20s and first diagnosed with endometriosis, which was AGONIZINGLY PAINFUL at that time. I knew even then I wouldn't want children....and they would not do it. I still had health insurance at the time so I went to many doctors, desperate to get spayed, and they all patted me on the head patronizingly and said, you'll change your mind, honey.

Here I am at 40, having had several stop-gap surgeries to clean out the adhesions, after MANY unsuccesful attempts to get the defective organs that were never useful to me in the first place removed...I'm just waiting out the clock, now.

I'd LOVE to know where this fictional place is where it's so easy for a woman to get ovaries removed. Even at this late date, I'd save up money to fly there!

37. well mine were removed when I was 43 against my will
the surgeon actually ordered a massive dose of sleeping meds and then came into my hospital room and claimed that my original consent form had been lost and I had to sign a new one the difference was the original was for an exploratory surgery that could also include oophorectomy and hysterectomy only if absolutely medically necessary the one I signed while drugged was simply for a female castration and nothing else the pathology reports I obtained after the surgery showed that they had removed healthy organs

That is unbelievably fucked up and wrong.

But both your issues and mine come from the same issue, I think - a place where health care is based on money and women's issues are NOT respected.

It is not right to sterilize a woman without her (informed, aware, non-drugged) consent.

It is not right to REFUSE to sterilize a woman despite her repeated requests to many different doctors over many years.

It comes down to the same issue about "choice" - are we, as women, the supreme owners of our own bodies, or aren't we? There's not much wiggle room on this, IMO. It's a yes or no question!

6. Good god. It's hard to imagine restaurant owners -- presumably adults --
who would freak out over this in the first place.

Did these people never take any sort of sex ed classes at some point or other?

Did the dog have a "George Michael Rules" button affixed to its collar, or what?

41. Well yeah, that's the point.
The patron said "Guide dog", but that sounds similar to how an Aussie would say "gay dog", (if there was ever a reason to say such a thing).

The whole deal sounds made up to me anyway. It's just so idiotic.

13. The request probably brought back some bad memories for that waiter
terrible disgusting degrading memories he thought he'd left buried behind him forever, when he began his new life in Aus.

I can totally see this happening. I can see it happening only in an early Almodovar farce, if Almodovar had been born Thai, but it's quite conceivable, nevertheless.

19. There is no such thing as a "gay" dog
Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 03:04 PM by tonysam
When unaltered male dogs are out humping each other, it's either because there is a dominance issue or else a female in heat is around someplace.

My male dogs once in a great while will hump each other, but it is always because there is a female in heat in the neighborhood.

One of these days I'll get Sam, a chihuahua, neutered, while Tony at 14 is too old to undergo surgery--he has a hard time with the anesthetic. When Sam first arrived on the scene about five years ago, those damned dogs spent three or four days humping each other in a marathon. I would lie in bed trying to sleep, and those damned dogs would get in my face humping each other. I tried to separate them, but it was no use.

Apparently it was a dominance game, and Tony won out.

I had to not laugh at him but explain the difference between what they usually do to dogs and what they usually do to humans. I did roll my eyes though.

35. It's amazing how many people on this thread don't even realize that
"gayness", in the sense of same-sex matings, exist naturally in all species.

None of which has anything to do with whether or not testes or ovaries are present or have been removed.

None of which has anything to do with dogs, in particular - if they see a leg they wanna hump, they'll hump it, and gender is no object. :D

40. I know, I am shaking my head at that also
Sexual orientation exists independently of presence of organs of reproduction. Some dogs are very open about what they will masturbate on or try to mate with, others are more particular.

she is fixed too- didn't change a thing when it comes to her sex drive :-) she likes to do it most when we have company, in the middle of the living room!

mammals are sexual beings one way or another, gay/straight/bi whatever :-)
