I wondered what James Lovelock, the creator of the Gaia theory
might have to say about the BP oil disaster. Of course, I completely forgot that he is 90 years old and likely doesn't even have a blog if he even gives a damn about what a blog is. But I found an interview with him from the Guardian dated March 29th, 2010. Less than a month before it happened.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/mar/29/james-lovelock-climate-change

Here's the first paragraph (be aware that this man pulls no punches):

Humans are too stupid to prevent climate change from radically impacting on our lives over the coming decades. This is the stark conclusion of James Lovelock, the globally respected environmental thinker and independent scientist who developed the Gaia theory.

1. I remember reading that interview last year
Although I think it's more complex than "stupidity", it's difficult to deny his conclusions. But in the big picture, so what? Species come and species go. The earth will recover from our brief and wild stay.

2. Gaia will survive her temporary infestation of humanity. We won't.

3. I know that but we're taking a lot of species with us
As well, if geologically, Earth is 3.5 billion years old, she isn't likely to be around more than 1 billion more, so we might have totally fucked up her chance to get decent, sentient stewards since we came so late in the game, geologically speaking. I don't think the cockroaches are going to have time to come up with much in the way of culture. And the two most likely species to ascend after man won't because were destroying their habitat right now. Then again, perhaps, with global warming, cetaceans will be able to straggle along by moving to the arctic for a few million years. I doubt they'll spend any time becoming land dwellers because we've fucked that up too.
