27. No.
This is simply asset management. All big companies have to put their cash somewhere, and it doesn't make sense to put it all in a bank. Just like any person, they need diversification in their portfolio.

Looking at the list, in terms of dollars, one of BP's biggest holdings is in ExxonMobil. They own 625,000 shares of XOM, out of 4.7 billion shares outstanding. In other words, they own 0.001% of ExxonMobil. This is paltry; I'm sure there are labor union pension funds that own more XOM than that. Their share of Goldman Sachs is even smaller, at 0.0001%.

Not defending BP or other corporations at all here, but this ownership in and of itself is not uncommon and isn't sinister.

It is a diversified portfolio of stocks. You get the same thing by investing into an index fund, a little bit of money in every major public company.

The only way that BP could possibly influence these companies is that if it becomes a major shareholder for these stocks, which doesn't seem to be the case.

I did a quick check of the value of these holdings last night. The first eight on the list are worth approximately 25 million.A drop in the bucket compared to what the spill cleanup will cost, without a doubt. However,if british petroleum tries to say they do not have the funds available this list can be used to prove them liars, again.

54. Siezing would be illegal and counter productive BUT
wouldn't it make sense to force BP to liquidate the $5.8B in investments (not oil rigs, or ships but financial investments) and put that money in the fund a little faster than $5B a year?

you are going to be screwing with the financial foundation not only of BP but potentially all the companies it has significant holdings in and that could be destabilizing. If BP goes under then what?

Oh...and I agree with the illegal and counterproductive bits...

58. How would BP stock holdings affect their financing stability.
BP doesn't rely on those. They are simply used because BP has so much cash that putting some of it into a diversified portfolio yields more.

For example:
Cash - $12.4 billion

vs
Cash - $6.8 billion
investments - $5.4 billion

BP will generated $30 billion in free cashflow in 2011. It has $12.4 billion in cash & investments. Your telling me that having them liquidate their holdings over say next 3 months and put money into the $20B fund faster than 3 years would cripple the company?

Really?

61. yes...really...
but only in the event that the cashflow stops or greatly reduces. you're talking about yanking 5.4bn in investments, converting it to cash but the thing is you are then taking that cash away from the company (under the scenario of the 'fast fill' of the escrow account). so if you take the whole thing to cash, then yank 10bn into an account off the company books...if their cash flow starts to dry up for whatever reason...yes...problems.

53. All companies put reserve cash into diversified portfolio.
BP has lots of spare cash.

The reality is they have about $5.4 billion in investments and $6.8 billion in cash.
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:BP&fstype=ii

However when I suggested yesterday that BP could "fill" the $20B escrow account a lot faster than $5B a year I down slammed for being anti-Obama. The $20B fund will allow BP to hang on to investment assets and slowly pay out claims. That is why Hayword looked happy and the stock is rallying.

Still there really is no point to kick this thread everyday.
All companies have investment assets and the companies on the list can't prevent BP from buying their shares. That is why we call them public companies.

Osama could buy shares in McDonalds. Should we then boycott McDonalds because it supports terrorists?

Still even if it didn't, only dividends can support terrorists not capital gains? Thats a kinda dubious distinction.

So if Obama buys a shares in a company we should boycott that company? Really?

66. How much reciprocal double dipping do you think might go on here?
What does it mean if the bulk of these companies in turn own BP stock, a nice little revolving door of profit never falling outside a select circle. There's a lot more than $20B on that list from companies we love to express angst in relation to.

Stunning. Please repost so I can rec.

I think it important that this list find a way to be kept front and center on a regular basis, like a thread in the lounge by graywarrior that 'never dies'. Might be a good idea to break it down a little, categorize them some. I see military to media and medicals, financiers to food and big pharma.

Very deep pockets here. Fortified in one another, is there any hope that their interlinking could be made to cause a collective fall?
