When the National Socialists German Worker's Party demanded total fealty...
No one questioned the demand for loyalty to the party before the nation...

When the National Socialists German Worker's Party demanded The the leader of the party could do no wrong...

Liberals laughed at how quaint that was in this day and age...

When the National Socialists German Worker's Party developed propaganda that every person repeated from the leader to the guy on the street...

Good people everywhere again laughed at how positively anti-intellectual that felt...

When the National Socialists German Worker's Party developed a media arm that worked with the party to disseminate the party line through voices that purported to be "nuetral"...

The Intellectuals laughed saying how silly all this was...

When the National Socialists German Worker's Party began to demand that homosexuals did not belong in Germany, that homosexuals were destroying the moral fabric of the Fatherland...

It wasn't aimed at them so most of the Germans were slightly relieved because the wrath of the National Socialists German Worker's Party wasn't aimed at them...

When the National Socialists German Worker's Party stole an election by unleashing mobs of angry people to shout down and intimidate local election officicals...

The leader of the opposition party gave up the fight in the name of national unity...

When the National Socialists German Worker's Party invaded two rather helpless countries the people were behind them almost 100% because these two country's were part of the mythical Fatherland...

When German people started to raise questions they were ignored by the German media and shouted down as traitors to the Fatherland...

Anyway, when does it end, when do the people ever stand up before it's too late?

There are certainly vast difference between what was allowed to happen in 1920-30's Germany and what is happening in America, but it does give this person pause to think about the similarities, minor and dismissable as some would say they might be, because it is never true that it can't happen here...

1. Memory fades...
...but human nature and the resulting social behaviors don't.

A critical mass will always be led by charismatic leaders.
A critical mass will always be manipulated with fear.
We are xenophobic, fearful of "other," by nature; our leaders know this.

It's a cycle with no end. There's some hope in the realization that things will get worse, but the worse will drive us back to the better eventually.

My gut tells me that the United States will become something very ugly. This list of what is wrong is becoming so long that it brings tears to my eyes when I think of my grandchildren.

3. The thing is, those vast differences are growing smaller,
In fact the differences are growing smaller at an increasingly fast rate.

The real start of this was Nixon, but Nixon was stupid and we had real media to catch him. Real progress towards a fascist state got started under Reagan and Bush. The War on Drugs, the War on Terror, don't look now, but there's going to be a War on Liberals soon.

Twenty five years ago I started predicting that we were going to become a truly fascist state within forty, fifty years, the end of a my lifetime. Looks like we're still on that timetable.

6. These are scary parallels.
If only our "leaders" could see them too...

Perhaps they don't see the road in front of them; or maybe they do, and this is where they want to go...

It can happen here.

8. The late, great Bill Dana, in a routine about spies, on what was the best kept secret of WWII:
"That's it's still going on."

Yep, we beat the Nazis over there, but BFEE and others in the US already had them over here. And they are winning.

10. You don't have to go back that far. Remember in the Bush administration
staffers admitted that they took an oath to be faithful to President Bush, not to uphold the Constitution.

11. That's what I am talking about...
The republicans view that as normal where as the democrats aren't so much into that type of stuff...

There is no way the people on conservative blogs would be questioning "their" president as much as we Question president Obama..

14. Hitler was a liberal socialist!!!!!
RWers keep telling me that because the word "socialist" is in the NAZI parties name, hitler was a leftist. They're so ignorant about history that they really are doomed to repeat it.

21. I don't really think so...
I am not calling the Republicans NAZI's nor do I say anything about fascism or socialism. What I am pointing out is the inherent tendency of people to allow and condone, by the mere lack of confrontation, certain public and political behavior that can, and often does, turn dangerous.

Beck, on the other hand, just throws out the word NAZI because it's a simple way to castigate people who you the enemy.

In many ways what Beck does could be consider Nazi-like behavior.

But then again calling a thought provoking post as being Beck like is actually a way to show you too, I guess, are treading on Beck Territory.
