2. Amazing....

Except the Ixtoc I oil spill was in shallow water and still wasn't stopped for months. If only we'd learned our lesson on that and treated finding cleaner alternative energy as a "Manhattan Project" or as we did going to the moon. Think where we'd be now.

Even if we acknowledge that we must have oil, and therefore must drill, I would argue that the Deepwater Horizon disaster was caused by lax regulation, itself the result of corrupt officials and a reliance on free-market principles (an assumption that the companies would self regulate in an attempt to avoid costly losses and bad PR that result from disaster).
