BBC reports Oil leak cut by "a third or half"

Gulf of Mexico oil cap funnels 6,000 barrels
at 18:05 GMT, Saturday, 5 June 2010 19:05 UK

A special cap funneling oil from the Gulf of Mexico spill appears to be having some success, a US Coast Guard official has said.

Adm Thad Allen said 6,000 barrels of oil were captured in the first 24 hours after the procedure commenced on Thursday. This represents between a third and a half of the estimated daily leakage since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank on 20 April, killing 11 workers.

Adm Allen said BP hoped to increase the amount captured in the next few days.

6. If this is true then it is a good start but still 12,000 + barrels per day are still..
.... leaking into the gulf. Even if BP still gets 90% control over the leak 2,000 barrels per day will
still be going into the gulf.

22. Totally agree. The 12,000 to 19,000 number is from analyzing surface oil....

16. More media fail....
The estimates given by the USGS simply agreed on a min. flow.

They did not give a certain higher limit on how much was flowing out of the well. The higher end was what the models agreed upon at the time they were run. At least one modeled higher than 19k. And these models were run before the CRAW ripped the riser off.

Not to mention that it is gushing out now just as much as it did when the cap was placed.

Also the sippy straw (riser tube) sucked up 8k a day before it was removed. If that wasn't considered a rousing success, then why is collecting even less oil with this cap considered one?!

Here's the USGS report for those interested including the sippy straw info (pdf):

18. Exactly.
I've seen all kind of numbers thrown out as to how much oil is gushing out. The models is just that, models. Video clearly shows a lot of oil gashing out despite the cap.

24. Sadly, the BBC has always been a mouthpiece of the British gov't and business.

If he were alive we could ask George Orwell. He worked in the India section of the BBC during the war years, broadcasting propoganda.
