Black Americans Twice More Likely to Pray at Bedtime than Whites
Black Americans Twice More Likely to Pray at Bedtime than Whites

A study of sleep behaviors by various demographic groups has found distinct differences in bedtime patterns, according to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2010 Sleep in America Poll.

For instance, African-Americans are more likely to pray or perform other religious activity (71%) before going to bed each night than Hispanics (45%), Whites (32%) and Asians (18%).

Ten percent of African-Americans and Hispanics reported they were more likely to have sex every night or almost every night one hour before bedtime. Only 4% of Whites and 1% Asians provided the same answer.

Asians, though, were more likely to use a computer or the Internet at least a few nights a week before going to bed than other groups (72% vs. 45% Whites, 43% Blacks/African-Americans and 41% Hispanics).

Also, Asians are the least likely to drink alcohol within one hour of sleeping at least a few nights a week (3% vs. 7% Hispanics, 8% Whites, and 8% African-Americans).

1. 'bout the only time I pray is when my Longshot Horse is coming down the stretch.

3. Holy crap! 32% of whites pray before bed?
In my entire life I've never met anyone who copped to actually doing that.

7. Depends on who you talk to, I suppose
I have associated pretty closely with evangelicals all of my life; prayer is generally a normal part of their day. The ones I know don't necessarily structure it according to a strict schedule; rather, they consider prayer something they engage in throughout their day (without the formality of actually stopping whatever they are doing at the moment. I think most would admit that morning and bedtime prayers are probably pretty much a part of their routine.

5. It's neither good nor bad...

It just reflects the different roles that religion plays in the various cultures and subcultures.

It's sort of like how a hijab marks a Turkish woman as being conservative and devout whereas because it's a more universal symbol among Somalis, it tells us less about a Somali woman's believe and cultural values (I know a Somali Marxist who wears once, for instance..More significantly, I live in Ottawa and virtually every Somali woman I know wears one regardless of her political convictions or her level of religiosity or integration into Western society).

6. Just as an aside, it would be interesting to me to know
how the percentages reflect evangelical vs. non-evangelical (confessional) Christian denominations.

Not to suggest that other faiths aren't included in this study, just wondering how the Christian cohort shakes out.
