Man who put up sign calling Democrats parasites is recipient of $1 million in farm subsidies

The Raytown farmer who posted a sign on a semi-truck trailer accusing Democrats of being the “Party of Parasites” received more than $1 million in federal crop subsidies since 1995.

But David Jungerman says the payouts don’t contradict the sign he put up in a corn field in Bates County along U.S. 71 Highway.

“That’s just my money coming back to me,” Jungerman, 72, said Monday. “I pay a lot in taxes. I’m not a parasite.”

After a story about Jungerman’s trailer ran in Sunday’s Star, however, some readers called him a hypocrite for criticizing others for getting government help while taking government subsidies paid for by taxpayers.

50. They certainly started out as a liberal idea
They were born out of the depression era and FDR's New Deal. The EU (which is arguably far more liberal than the US) uses farm subsidies extensively (although they implement them quite differently than the US). Farm subsidies serve a useful purpose because farming depends a lot on the weather, which is not constant year to year. If farms were forced to operate under a laissez-faire system, much farmland would be abandoned during bumper crop years. Farm land that is abandoned is often very difficult (if not impossible or very impractical) to revert back to farmland. The net result would be much higher prices to the consumer.

The problem with current US farm subsidy policy is it allows large farms to buy out smaller farms using subsidy money. So this is actually an example of good liberal policy which has been hijacked and subverted by so-called conservatives.

7. Someone torched his sign and the paper did a story that got over 500 comments
Most of the comments praised the guy and condemned the arson. But then one guy looked up the guy and found his subsidies and posted the link. Of course the wingnuts all defended him and said he earned this money.

I was stunned to see this article just go up on the paper's website. I guess this means the paper reads the comments.

Guy sounds like a nut with too much money. There was a story in the first article about the police taking his Rolex watch.

http://www.kansascity.com/2010/06/19/2029960/missouri-mans-incendiary-sign.html

I want a subsidy. Maybe then I can finally afford that Rolex I have always wanted.

I think you deserve one for the OP, as does the guy who took the initiative to check out this jerk. With so many teabagger idiots (and their adored media and GOP idols) spouting their irrational nonsense, it's hard not to have the feeling we're living in Bizarro World.

I'm impressed that the paper's editors had the sense to pick up on this. Good for them!

90. I bet if you check how much he claims in income and pays in taxes,
he is getting back a big portion of the taxes he pays. Farmers not only get subsidies, but they also get all kinds of tax write-offs for their business costs. Personally, I think the subsidies and the tax write-offs are all warranted. All of us who eat and drink owe the fact that our food is so cheap, at least in part, to that government assistance.

So far I have found an insurance agent I pulled my policy from when he saw me protesting against the war one day and made an obnoxious comment. I canceled my policy with his company the next day. He lives here in the city but has received $60,000 in farm subsidies.

I also found a repuke acquaintance's family. She loves to trash Democrats and thinks Sarah Palin is all that and then some. Her family has received $1,750,000 in subsidies.

I'm looking up all kinds of folks. This is awesome.

23. Been having this farm subsidy argument here for decades
I hate the things, especially since so many farmers here are NOT poor and don't need the money. But I have friends who are good liberals who come from farm families and defend the subsidies.

One grew up on a farm where her parents still live. No one farms the land anymore. Both her parents have jobs - her dad works at a car dealership as a mechanic and her mom is a teacher. But they get farmer welfare checks every year. For NOT farming.

It's an insanely unjust system.

This guy in the article lives in the city and owns a business but also farms. And he got $33,000 in subsidies last year.

Farmers also don't pay sales tax in Kansas.

I'm sick of this shit. Glad this guy got called out.

27. Love this comment!
Other business owners who are unable to get a guaranteed profit on their enterprises and efforts don't get a subsidy for their business. It is called corporate welfare. Mr. Jungerman thinks that because the others like him who get millions are somehow better than those who get enough money and assistance to live in ghettos and live a subsidence existence.

Farm subsidies cost taxpayers $25 Billion per year or nearly $82 for every man woman and child in this country. Compare that to the approximately $2.5 Billion it costs to feed 25 million people using food stamps, or approximately $16.5 Billion provided to families through TANF (Temporary Aid to Needy Families - welfare).

Mr. Jungerman has received on average $73,000 per year in corporate welfare yet decries the fact that a family of four receiving both cash and food stamp assistance receives about $16,600 per year or 16.5 times the amount of any individual in one of these families. Sounds like hypocrisy to me.

I don't recall exactly, for some reason I think it's five years that a person can receive TANF money, though it could be seven years. AND TANF money has to be paid back. Somehow, I don't think the million plus dollars Mr. Jungerman has taken out of the Treasury is ever going to be paid back.

41. Which is why I do not give ANY consideration to the tea parties pleas.
They are the same bitter reactionaries who cry and threaten violence when they don't get their way, such as losing a Presidential election. Rand Paul fits in this category. He opposes government, yet he is a recipient of Medicare. He tells the unemployed to take a lesser salary, yet he demands that his medicare payments not be reduced.

He seems like a reasonable guy. I'm sure he'd be willing to have a discussion on the subtle differences between welfare and subsidies.

Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 10:21 AM by redqueen
but I kinda doubt it.

I'm also positive he gets more than that from the government...that's *just* the subsidies. He also gets his mail delivered, police protection, access to roads, etc.

92. Wikipedia has a good article on farm subsidies.
Here is an excerpt.

The subsidy programs give farmers extra money for their crops and guarantee a price floor. For instance in the 2002 Farm Bill, for every bushel of wheat sold farmers were paid an extra 52 cents and guaranteed a price of 3.86 from 2002–03 and 3.92 from 2004–2007.<17> That is, if the price of wheat in 2002 was 3.80 farmers would get an extra 58 cents per bushel (52 cents plus the $0.06 price difference).

Corn is the top crop for subsidy payments. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 mandates that billions of gallons of ethanol be blended into vehicle fuel each year, guaranteeing demand, but US corn ethanol subsidies are between $5.5 billion and $7.3 billion per year. Producers also benefit from a federal subsidy of 51 cents per gallon, additional state subsidies and, federal crop subsidies that can bring the total to 85 cents per gallon or more.<18> (US corn-ethanol producers are also shielded from competition from cheaper Brazilian sugarcane-ethanol by a 54-cent-per-gallon tariff<19><20>)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agricultural_subsidy

According to Wikipedia tobacco farmers got some subsidies in 2004. What? I hope that tobacco farm subsidies are no longer available.

Of course, some of the subsidies may be for NOT growing crops.
