Teen's shooting death a botched retaliation, police say
Comments (0)
BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle
WICHITA — He never saw his killers.

The 13-year-old boy simply heard a knock on the door early Sunday morning and went to answer it.

The two men standing at the door at 2412 N. Jackson didn't wait for the door to open before they began shooting, police said.

They didn't know who was behind that door, Lt. Todd Ojile said, and they didn't care.

The young teen was hit by several bullets and collapsed as the two suspects fled on foot just after 6 a.m.

1. Ego.
I'll get laughed at for saying this, but that's it.

Such a tragic and unfortunate event. I'm sorry for your student and the victim's loved ones. 13 years old. Shame.

2. so much tragedy at such a young age
maybe it is just that I grew up in a small town, but these kids have had to witness more than I would ever be aware of.

My hat goes off to them many times. To live among such threats daily and still act like life is okay? I couldn't do it

3. I think you may be on to something.
I grew up in a small town, and sure it was a "different time" but not once, not one single time did I ever worry about being shot/killed. Today, I hear every week about this kid or that kid getting gunned down either at school or in his/her neighborhood. On purpose, or by "accident"

I couldn't bear to have a child here in Tampa. No way.

4. I saw that headline in the KC paper and stopped breathing for a minute
It was a sad sense of relief to see it was a kid in Wichita and not one here whom I might have known.

Damn. These always hurt.

5. I was waiting for the phone call that would have been one of mine
but breathed a small sigh when that call never came. Now I am emailing a former student who is saying if he had been at his cousin's house that night he would have been the one at the door and blaming himself.

7. He and a group of boys think they are gonna get them back
thus the cycle continues.

This kid was on the brink and was making good choices, but I fear now that it is too late.

AND the police are downplaying the Gang involvement but my student says it is totally gang related but his cousin was not in a gang, the kid in the house next door was. His cousin had refused all offers and was getting pressured.

9. It was a bloodbath in Chicago this weekend - 52 shot, 8 murdered.
Why does this go on? My theories: 1. A strong "no snitching" attitude. Even the kids shot won't tell the cops who did it. And they won't testify if the cops find out independently. 2. Kids get in beefs for the usual reasons, but see loss of face as a reason to kill someone. It really is not about drug territory. It is who made fun of whom, who screwed whose sister/girlfriend/cousin and other nonsense. All kids are dumb, but when you are walking around with an 80 IQ then reasons get even dumber.

11. I hear that "no snitching" all the time
and there is nothing you can do to convince them that it is the best thing for everyone to tell someone.

<sigh>

12. To tell you the truth...
...I'm actually more surprised that humans generally hold it together as well as they do. Doing terrible things is terribly easy to do, yet most people restrain themselves. The big news stories, especially when they hit close to home, create a distorted image of how much senseless violence is actually happening.
