Here's what I think President Obama should do with General McChrystal
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 09:25 AM by MineralMan
I think President Obama should refuse to accept his resignation, demote him in rank to Colonel, and assign him to the Pentagon desk in charge of latrine design. All of those things are within the President's authority. The POTUS may do as he pleases with the General Staff, and need not accept a resignation if he so chooses, if the needs of the military would be better served. Every POTUS has complete authority over the General Staff.

My reason for suggesting this is that, as long as General McChrystal remains in the military, he may not publicly criticize the President without being subject to court martial for gross insubordination. It's a risk McChrystal is not likely to take.

So, I hope President Obama does not accept a resignation, but uses his authority as POTUS to move McChystal to another position that is "important" for the military. After all, troops everywhere need good latrine designs. Without them, their health may suffer. It's a suitable job for General (soon to be Colonel) McChrystal.

1. I agree.
He wants out so he can point and claim that Obama is fucking it up. He needs a public flogging and a shitty job.

3. I was thinking along the same lines. Don't fire him. Reduce him in rank
and send him to a nice post, like Alaska.

4. I think he should be kept in Washington. The Pentagon has
many desks filled with incompetent officers, assigned to them for "the good of the military." It's a relatively common thing.

5. Strip him of rank and let him explain that to his peers.
Good idea.

""...subject to court martial for gross insubordination.""

7. Why would Obama lower himself to McChrystal's level?
Accept the resignation, let him yelp however he may, and move on. McChrystal is an unprofessional POS unworthy of his rank, and meanwhile...soldiers are dying.

Read "Catch-22" for precedent.

It's way, way out there in the Aleutian Island chain.

Now called Eareckson Air Station. I was almost stationed there while serving in the USAF in the late 1960s. He could see Russia from his quarters.

13. And he actually said...
"We've shot an amazing number of people and killed a number and, to my knowledge, none has proven to have been a real threat to the force."

Oooops!

20. I know what the story is. I do not know what President Obama

will do about it. I have an idea of what he might do, and the effects that would have.

I served in the USAF from 1965-1969 as a Russian linguist. Thank you for asking.

This thread stands on its own. You've apparently misinterpreted a reply from another thread. I'm not quite sure why you brought into this one, though.

I can make a suggestion as to what the President should do. I know what his authority allows him to do. If you disagree with what I suggested, I'd be interested to hear why and what you would advise him to do. That was the reason I wrote the OP...not to discuss the subject of another thread.
