Is it just me, or are candidates like this sliding their way back into the realm of semi-legitimate mainstream American politics? Is the medea going to treat this guy like just another Tea Party rebel? Is this crap now going to become a regular part of our political dialogue?

It's a matter of black and white, says Ryan Murdough, Republican candidate for the State House in Grafton County's 8th District.

No room for gray area. And no room for Asians or Hispanics or Jews or African-Americans or American Indians, either.

Just Americans. Real Americans. Plymouth Rock Americans. White Americans who bleed red, white and blue. Uncle Sam wants them. To anyone else, don't let Lady Liberty hit you on the butt on your way out of New York Harbor.

Murdough says he's nonviolent, that his vision for a new America can be achieved without resorting to genocide or imprisonment.

So please, don't call him a racist. He says that's not true.

I say no, so I can't really be a racist, because I don't hate them. I just don't want to live around areas that are heavily, predominantly non-white."

Racists have always been there, always trying to get in charge. There hasn't been any significant upsurge in racism; it's been simmering at fairly constant levels for decades. The same people who are hating blacks today were hating Mexicans yesterday and hating Arabs the day before that. There haven't been many "converts."

What has changed is that anti-racism has taken a steep decline. Many here on the left are at such a point that they cannot even perceive racism, because they've convinced themselves that there is no such thing. We "won" so why worry about it? It's to the point where you can get attacked as begin a racist, if you're the one pointing out a racist offense! Because, the logic goes, recognizing race at all is itself racist; we're not supposed to notice such things as differences, and even taking the tiny step to acknowledge and confront the hatred some people have for those differences is itself regarded as hateful. We're supposed to just pretend those peopel aren't there saying these things.

it's one of the areas that we liberals, as a movement, have gotten very soft and wussy about. We need active anti-racism, confrontation against hate, and counter-movements. We can't just expect these people to tar and feather themselves.
