Key West spared from BP oil disaster ...almost.
Not a drop of oil, none. This island is sunny, hot and oil free. and yet business here is being hurt by the disaster because of misinformation. I thought we might see an uptick because the gulf shores of the other vacation states had oil washing up on them , but no.

The main reason we have been spared is because the loop current has pinched off from the gulf current for the moment. The oil needs the loop current to feed it to the gulf current in order for it to make it's run around Florida and up the coast.

Our tourist season starts in October , I hope the people show up, I really do, this island needs some good news fast.

This map will give you an idea of what is taking place today...

And here is but a small pic of what is at stake. Florida generates over 50 billion a year on tourism, and is probably the number one tourist destination on our planet.

1. One of the best bike rides in the world: Florida City to Key West.
I've done it about 30 times. Rain shine or wind, its a one of a kind ride.

EBC will be there this winter. :hi:

3. Probably because other data contradicts this
Where did this map come from? No source. There are even satellite images showing oil threads rounding the tip of Florida and off the east coast shore. Why else would tar balls be washing up on Cocoa Beach?

I recommend this site for the most comprehensive source of the oil spill, from all aspects of it. If you take the time to click the links to the original sources, it might surprise you.

I neither recommended nor unrecommended the OP.

5. I started this thread because of the misinformation.

Your post is a perfect example.

There are NO satellite images showing oil rounding Florida

The tar balls on Coco Beach ARE NOT from the BP disaster.

Stop the misinformation, it's killing tourism, you are playing a part of that.

The site you posted shows the same thing I posted, the loop current is pinched off.

7. Did you click on the original sources from that site?
If you do you will see the satellite images. The tests on the tar balls from Cocoa Beach were determined to not be from a shrimp boat which sunk, but they are not saying at all where they came from.

Don't dismiss all this without doing some research.

8. "Don't dismiss all this without doing some research."
I suggest you do the same.

Look at the pic I posted from the link YOU provided. It shows WOM (water oil mixture) ...now do you see WOM in the gulf stream ?

Lets be honest for a moment, shall we ?

Don't insist there are satellite images showing oil in the gulf stream rounding Florida and then REFUSE TO POST IT.

Peoples lives are at stake, stop the spin already.

9. Those pix are on that site
You search for it. That ROFFS image is not the only one. Yeah, THAT is on that site also.

This is precisely why Florida needs to diversify and not be so totally dependent on tourism. They weren't coming before because of the economy, and you can add this to it.

Anyway, you should know that this is the Summer and not SEASON. The tourists and snowbirds come November through March, not the middle of July. That is why the hotel rates plumment in all of Florida during the summer months. The majority of visitors to your area this time of the year are probably locals from other parts of Florida, not so much from up north. It's very hot up there now and they can just go to their own local beaches and save a lot of money.

See what happens come November. That will be the judge of all this. For what it's worth, Naples is as dead as a doornail now. Nothing unusual about that though.

10. more spin.
"You search for it."

Thats what I thought. Why don't you just just the link you posted ? I posted a pic from it and it shows no WOM in the gulf stream, yet you insist it's there and tell me to "search for it"

"Anyway, you should know that this is the Summer and not SEASON"

Thanks for telling me how my city runs, if you bothered to read the OP you would have noted I said our tourist season is coming up, starting in October.
