Sarah Palin's new word has me thinking that the Tea Party is where some of my way-back college roomies wound up. That's where "exsettera" came from, and I can still set my ears ringing by recalling the rebuke I received when I suggested a more correct pronunciation.
Way back in '67 one of that bunch routinely mispronounced words and screamed insults toward anyone who tried to clarify her intent by asking, "Were you trying to say 'nuclear'?"
Another gave some creative energy to her singular pronunciations: charismatic was rendered 'keerzmatic', dour came out as 'doer' (as in evil-doer). You were accused of thinking yourself better than others if you offered a different option. And if you DIDN'T mention it, you deliberately withheld that information in order to make her look foolish.
Back in the '80s, one of my associates routinely routinely wished people a happy 'birfday', surprising in that he had no difficulty with any other words with the 'th' combo. He went off on his boss when he was asked to pronounce it correctly in the office and in front of customers. "I have two degrees, and YOU are telling ME how to talk?! Who cares, anyway?" I remember thinking at the time, "We Earflings care."
