Elena Kagan Nominee Confirmed By Senate Judiciary Committee
Edited on Tue Jul-20-10 11:48 AM by SunsetDreams
WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!
The vote was just taken.

Edited to add this:

Supreme Court Elena Kagan confirmed by Senate Judiciary Committee in 13-6 vote

Kagan wins approval in a nearly party-line vote, with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina joining the majority Democrats. She is expected to gain full Senate confirmation in August.

Reporting from Washington — Elena Kagan, President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, won approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee on a nearly party-line vote Tuesday, her next to last hurdle before gaining a lifetime seat on the high court.

....

If she is confirmed by the Senate as expected early in August, the nine-member court will have four Democratic appointees for the first time since 1971. And for the first time ever, three of the justices will be women, and none will be a Protestant.

Just one Republican, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, joined panel Democrats in supporting President Barack Obama's second Supreme Court nominee. A few more Republicans are likely to back her in the full Senate, where Democrats have more than enough votes to confirm her.

6. Yes it will be great,
if she is confirmed by the entire Senate, which I suspect she will be.

10. It's Nice To Have 2 Obama Appointees On The Bench
However, I wish we'd get a chance to swing the Supreme Court over to our favor. Sotomayor and Kagan are replacing two left-leaning Justices. What we really need is for some of these right-wing A-hole Justices (cough, Scalia, cough) to leave the bench so Obama can replace them with better people. Why couldn't Rehnquist have held on just a little while longer? Not only would we have gotten someone better than frickin' John Roberts, but then the idiot-boy Bush wouldn't have gotten to select a political hack as the Chief Justice either. I won't be like the low life scumbag Freepers and their overlords (cough, Ann Coulter, cough) who were praying for the deaths of left-leaning Justices, but it WOULD be nice if Obama could get a leg up in the Supreme Court rather than simply "holding serve."
