I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND right wingers...I was posting on a fairly RW gun forum this morning
(under my gun forum name)and someone posted they did not want their daughters to join Girl Scouts because of what they are taught there now...you know, stuff like "dealing with sexual harassment"...
What, is that "socialist" or something?

I have no kids (my choice many years ago) but if I had a daughter I would go out of my way to expose her to that kind of information as part of her education and life prep...I would also teach her to shoot, but that's another post...

What are these people thinking?

1. A lot of fundies
of which the right is filled feel that only they should be able to indoctrinate their daughters. You know, cause the woman has to submit to the man sort of shit.

I once reviewed a book about dads and daughters written from a fundie perspective and hoo boy did the whackjobs take issue with my findings that it was a POS that would do nothing to help any form of healthy relationship.

20. What about mail order?
BTW, Oklahoma is a bright red state, but they are among the top five states buying porn. I bet the fundies in Alabama have closets full of dildos, porn and other sexual toys.

I almost forgot: Did Alabama also outlaw cucumbers, squash and zucchini? :) There's always away around any law.

4. Fundies think girls don't know anything at all about 'sex' quote-unquote
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 09:30 AM by lunatica
The first time they get even the tiniest clue is on their wedding night. And they're not supposed to enjoy it. They're supposed to 'submit' to their husbands quote-unquote. If they don't 'submit' then what's the use?

6. Comedian Ron White put it best:
"You can't fix stupid."

The anti-girl scout poster has a stupid belief: That girls should not be taught about sexual harassment because they shouldn't know anything about sex. Until they are married.

Why the belief is stupid: Women of all ages may encounter sexual harassment. Knowing how to deal with it prepares one for a real and actual threat. The world does not care if you don't want your daughter to know what sex is until she is in her twenties.

Oh well, I guess that person's daughter is going to be a deer caught in the headlights when she meets her first pervert. :(

7. Many fundies see women are weak and need men
And wouldn't want someone to teach them to stand up for themselves.

They still believe the old oppression thing from 50 years ago.

We have two girls and raised them with the belief they own their own destiny and there isn't anything they can't do. I also treat my wife as a partner, not an object and decisions are made together.

But I guess that is because I am one of those bleeding heart liberal dads who want only the best for his kids.

but still not radified. Keeping women down under thumb is what they want. Its almost demeaning. Imagine its their own sisters, aunts, nieces, daughter, mothers, wives and grandmothers.

11. Fundies have turned on Girl Scouts.
1) Because they are welcoming of everyone -- especially gays.

2) They have programs that teach sexual responsibility.

3) They have partnerships with other organizations like Planned Parenthood and United Way, which are right up there on the fundies' top ten BAD groups. (I don't know about the PP connection, but they've convinced themselves of it and there's no use talking them down.)

You can't engage them in any kind of dialogue. Once in an argument over 2), I quoted chapter and verse from a leader's manual about GS's programs on this issue and I was still told I was full of shit. They still think that GS promotes a climate of free sex and abortions beginning at the Junior level onward, when nothing is further from the truth. GS, in fact, does not sugarcoat any aspect of this issue, and presents ALL sides in a fair manner to girls can make the choices that best suits THEM.

Just imagine. GS promotes the empowerment of girls so that they grow into confident, competent young women. It's more than just an outfit that sells Thin Mints once a year.

People will believe whatever crazy-assed shit they want. After awhile, you have to shake the dust off your shoes and move on. Life is too fucking short.

13. Back in 1962, the Catholic parish where I attended elementary school would not allow my Girl Scout
troop to use the church basement as an after-school meeting location, even though all girls in the troop were students in the parish school, and Catholic. Those nice Methodists down the street, however, welcomed us with open arms.

The Boy Scouts, however, were not only welcomed in the church basement, but the parish priest occasionally gave the invocation (or whatever you call it).

Figures.

18. Some probably do think it's socialist.
"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians." - Pat Robertson

This statement is so OTT it always makes me LOL

19. Repulsive people, the rightwingers
They disgust me so much that I myself sometimes want to give up my guns, so as not to have anything in common with them.

Then I think about it, and who would be left with guns, and want to buy many more.

21. Gun forums are a truly scary place. Theres a well known gun forum here in GA

called "Georgia Outdoor News". You go to the "politics" section and it is like an echo chamber of Rushbo/Beck/Hannitard/Brietfart quotes. Every single forum post is an implied threat to the president/congress/liberals in general.

25. That's one reason I love to go there - I have a sig line that lets them know
there are armed leftists in the US and that the right wingers are not the only ones who know how to use guns.
Some of them don't believe it, but it gives a few of them doubts their "revolution" will be as easy as they think.

They REALLY DO want to kill us, you know...

29. I own guns and frequenting gun owner forums are frustrating as hell
Practically everyone in most gun forums are hardcore right wingers. They post some scary stuff too. I know for a fact that there is a surprisingly huge chunk of gun owners that are in a way disappointed Obama hasn't gone after their guns.

30. First, welcome to DU!
Second, check the GUNS forum here or Google for The Liberal Gun Club - it will help ease your mind. Nearly 40% of the guns in the US are owned by Democrats/Liberals/Progressives.

26. I'm sure they would be fine with letting kids carry loaded weapons though.
I'm not talking about you, but right wingers seem to believe guns, threats, violence and war are the answers to most problems. They are attracted to conflict and always condemn diplomacy. They'd rather react on a primal level than use their brains to resolve issues.

BTW, this story about my Dad is 'somewhat' relevant to teaching girls about protecting themselves: When I was just a kid my Dad managed a service station. One of his regular customers was a deputy sheriff. Every time he came to get gas he would proudly show off his big gun on his hip. Finally, my Dad asked him, "What would you do with a big gun like that?". (the gun was a 45) The deputy said, "If any ni...ger raped my daughter I'd kill him!". My Dad quickly shot back at him saying, "Do you mean it's okay if a white guy does it (rapes his daughter)?" The deputy's mind short circuited and he ended up leaving without being able to respond. My Dad fried the guy's small, bigoted brain.
