Top 10 Stolen Cars

The latest list of the top 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States formulated by the Highway Loss Data Institute has now been released. This list is complied by taking a look at the rate with which people file insurance claims for a particular car.

According to the data, most of the cars with the highest overall theft losses tend to be SUVs and large pickups. The reasoning behind it isn't because theives are suddenly into large fuel demanding vehicles, but because theives are attracted to chrome, raw horsepower, and HEMI engines.
As such, the Cadalac Escalade ranks first in overall theft loss; the average yearly losses of an Escalade are more than seven times the averages of other smaller passengers vehicles. Nearly 1 out of every 4 Escalade theft claims totalled more than $40,000!

Note that there are a lot of GM vehicles on the list despite OnStar's ability to remotely shut down a stolen vehicle and give a GPS fix to the police.


Maybe the boys in Deerborn adopted the ball-crunching anti-carjacking robotic arm from The Naked Gun? :evilgrin:

5. Uh... I could say the same for Chevy, but I reserve my hatred

and derision for foreign cars who profit off paying non-union workers in America less and take their profits home instead of helping our economy.

BTW, the No. 1 stolen car of all times is a Mustang, but don't let that get cha down.

6. Hmm, all those vehicles are expensive, large and get pretty much poor mileage

(excepting the Infiniti and Maxima)and are in the class I would call "seen by the side of the road with a sale sign in the window with two years left in payments and just before the warranty runs out" - well, I would if that sentence wasn't way too long.

I wonder how many of those auto thieves either answered an ad on Craigslist or knew the desperate owners and were "doing them a favor" getting a soon to be clunker off their hands.

11. They steal them for scrap metal or resale parts.

They're not even bothering to actually steal the car around here. They just take a reciprocating saw (demolition saw) with a metal cutting blade, scoot under the SUV and cut off the entire exhaust system. No visible evidence. When the owner starts the thing, they sure HEAR it.

The muffler and CV are sold (if in good shape) and the rest ends up in the scrap metal places, although some of them are checking IDs on people who bring in car parts (if they spot them).
