"No Tillman movie at Army, Air Force theaters
By Karen Jowers - Staff writer
Posted : Sunday Sep 5, 2010 17:51:48 EDT
Theaters on Army and Air Force installations will not show “The Tillman Story,” according to Chris Ward, spokesman for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, which operates the theaters.

Navy Installation Command public affairs officials could provide no information about the Navy Motion Picture Service will show the movie on Navy and Marine Corps bases. But it is not listed in upcoming screening schedules on the NMPS website.

The movie, which does not portray the Army and Defense Department in a positive light, is the story of Pat Tillman, who left a lucrative career as a professional football player to join the Army in 2002 and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004."

3. I'm sure that couldn't be correct. We have FREEDOM! Its only Russia and
Iran who censor what their citizens can watch.

Isn't that right?

:sarcasm:

4. Censored is disingenuous. It's not on many screens in the first place.
I have to drive halfway across Los Angeles to see it. It's a documentary in limited release. So why would they program a movie that few people are going to see?

If I was in charge of screens for the Air Force exchange, I'd have picked the Expendables over the Tillman movie, too. The job is to fill the seats.

6. Military related movies/documentary have been pre-screen at AAFES theaters
Edited on Mon Sep-06-10 03:51 PM by itsrobert
in the past. As long as they were Pro-Military. Did you not know that little fact? A movie featuring military operations would spark the interest of military members alot more than the general public.

9. Hard to call "Paths of Glory" a movie.popular in general release
Meaning, if it's military related, movies have been shown on military bases for that reason.

11. Not selecting an art-house documentary for screening doesn't equal censorship.
3398 screens for Expendables
5 for Tillman.

Documentaries have very limited audiences, and if it sparks someone's interest, they'll seek it out. If the engagement averages are high, the release will expand a bit. There's other documentaries out there right now making more money than Tillman Story, and they are also not being shown on bases.

Would a movie about military fuckups spark more interest to the military or the public, I don't know, I'd have to poll that. Because the general public loves being critical of the military, too. It was probably one of the hottest tickets at Sundance, which isn't exactly a military base.

I do know that a testosterone roller coaster with every action star on the planet, is gonna fill a theater on a military base. That's good scheduling, not censorship. Censorship would be if I bought a DVD online, and the Army inspected the contents of my package and deemed it contra-ban, or tore pages out of a magazine because they didn't want me to read an article.

There's plenty of other targets for my outrage, this is not one of them.

18. Too Real For 'Em, Huh?
It's a must-see for me and I don't follow sports.

When you listen to Ann Coulter blab on about how Bush "kept us safe", think Pat Tillman. I haven't felt even a bit safe since the two-headed Bush-Cheney "leader" emerged on the scene. 20,500 war dead aren't safe, either. Bush/Cheney kept us safe from the truth, also.

Natch the military won't admit their failures and cover-ups, like Tillman. It's business as usual.

5. All the more reason for them to see it........
God forbid we shed any light on the military, DOD or the Pentagon, the pillars of truth, justice, and the American way!
Oh, I'm sorry, was that out loud? Just ask Tillman's parents how this was handled.............

12. It would be more surprising if they did show it.
Banning it from military theaters is not unexpected.

13. In this earlier thread there is some discussion as to why this is so.
There are many documentaries/movies that are not shown in military theaters. Popularity is one of the criteria for their selections. A limited release documentary doesn't fit into the category of 'popular.'

Lack of showing a film some people like does not a conspiracy make. Nor censorship.

14. But military theme/related documentaries and movies are shown on base
despite not being very popular in the civilian world.

15. *All* of them? Or only *some* of them. Even in the non-military world,
not every movie is shown in each and every theater.

No conspiracy here. No censorship.

17. If they want to watch it, they'll watch it.
They know how to download movies and rip them to DVD's like every other 20 year old.
