The Rich Will Still Get A Tax Cut Up To $250,000 If The bush Cuts For The Rich Expire
I've been talking to the few Rs that I know, and they are under the impression that if you make over $250,000 that you will get no tax cut when Obama lets those upper-income bush tax cuts expire. They believe that "everybody else in the country gets to keep their tax cut while mine is being taken away."

When I point out to them that they WILL get the same bush tax cut up to the first $250,000 they make but will now pay a higher rate on anything above that, they don't believe me. They think Obama is taking away all of their tax cut.

How does one deal with that?

1. In general people have no clue about the structure of the tax system
none whatsoever. Like any other area of ignorance, the RW capitalizes on it.

4. True, but I haven't heard Ds making it clear to the rich that they still get
those cuts on income up to $250,000. That's a message our side needs to get out. The Rs sure as shit aren't going to do it for us.

2. Dunno. Explain, carefully, I guess.
I'd expect that those in that bracket would know enough to understand. Mebbe its just their accountants who do?

3. Tell them to ask their accountsnts. That's the easiest way.
Takes you off the hook and if they get the info from someone else they don't have to eat crow n front of you.

5. First off you don't know if he is correct or not.

So you have to go all the way down to why he thinks President Obama is less truthful then his information source.

They could be right, explain that to him, then explain how it is all what source he chooses to believe and why, and try to show him how you find ways to decide what source of information is more credible.

You might also have to go all the way to what is most important to him, if the choice of information is based on some thought of what he wants to happen, or what he wants to be true. So he can realize part of what he believes comes from a choice of how he wants to see the world.

It is possible he can't accept some concepts if they clash with what he wants to believe.

And you don't have to change his mind, just help him think on why he thinks and feels some things.

That's how I think on such things.

Then again, I still don't have beer and travel money, and some comment the same way to me :)

7. I keep trying to tell everyone that.
I had the problem nearly 15 years explaining it to my benefit rep. He kept telling me that all of the taxable income was at the top marginal rate for that amount.

He had no clue about taxes.

I guess the best way to explain it to them is that their income is taxed at different tax rates. That there are 6 different income ranges taxed at different rates. If they are lucky enough to earn more than $373,650 of TAXABLE income they will be taxed at 35% for the TAXABLE income above that amount. Everything below will be taxed at lower rates.

OH!! They also complain about people not paying taxes on income. Well EVERYONE has income that is legally not taxed.

As an experiment you should ask if they know how their income is taxed and if they know what a progressive tax system is all about.
